My friend just bought a KTM525 xc with a 540 big bore kit. I have just basic upgrades .20/pipes/K&N/28mm carbs/v-force 3/...do even stand a chance a competing with him or is now time for me to build a bigger motor????

I test drove a KTM at unadilla and there pretty nasty but a lot of power is held back unless its modded like a she.

I agree, the KTM MX thumpers hit pretty hard right out of the box and even better with a few mods. Problem is many of them are pretty short on gearing so you might chase him down on the top. If he can ride, he should come out of the hole pretty hard and walk you for the first 100ft. That all depends on level of rider too.
