Why did you start another thread on this? We explained exactly how to do it in the thread you had going yesterday.

sorry i couldnt find that thread but i just found it imust have overlooked it thanks for the help i was testing with the meter on dc ohms thats probly the deal and i already checked the bulbs there good

I just felt compelled to hang shit I guess. :biggrin: Sorry about that. Try just ohms and that should get you what you need. It is important to test the coil resistance if there is not voltage output. Some voltage regulators can short to ground and ground all power to the chassis. A resistance check will determine what is really going on most of the time.

dude im going crazy here i ohmed the stator it is at .3 i think thats ok i started it up and its putting out @12volts at a little above idle and a lot more when the engine is wound up i have power up to the socket where the bulb locks in but no lights i looked at the bulbs and they look good i did a continuit y check and the bulbs check out how can this be. could the voltage regulator be screwed ,i dont know if this could have anything to do with it but the frame has been powder coated could this have any thing to do with the problem? any suggestions!

if you are getting good voltage to the bulbs, then the regulator is not the problem. make sure you have good ohm between all black wires, you could have a bad ground from powdercoating, so it would be cood to check that the black wire that connects the stator wire to the frame has good contact

I think he answered his own question on the problem. If the regulator is not chassis grounded, it will NOT regulate voltage. If you can rev the bike to around 5000rpm and the voltage is over 15V, you have a problem. It really should not climb much of 14VAC really. The reason you have no lights is because they are blown. They will work at idle but as soon as you zing the motor, you will get a nice 20VAC hit that will toast the bulbs. Get your reg checked out first thing.

i was checking the voltage at the stator wires thats why the voltage wouid jump up high and as i said i checked the bulbs and there not blown i checked the voltage at the connector before the light bulb and it stays in range that the manual suggest im going to check the grounds but i really dont know what to do next?

so you checked the voltage at the plug ands it was in spec- regulator good. if you checked between the black wire at the plug, then its all good to the switch. on the switch side of the plug, measure between the yellow/red wire and yellow wire with switch on high, and yellow/red and green wire for low beam with switch on low. yellow/red and blue for tail wit switch in high or low. that will test switch good/bad. also check the plugs on the frame behind the front shocks- could've been forgotten. if you're not getting ground at the headlight, then you need to check the frame ground, but i can't remember where it is.
