ok so i was riding my banshee the other day and it got stuck where it would only go between 3rd and 4th gear i belive, so i got on here and searched the forums and saw where people had problems with the shift star, so i pulled the clutch cover and everthing seemed to be fine including the springs so i pulled the motor and split the cases and it will only go between like 3 gears when i stuck the shifter back on but the shift forks dont look bent or anything any ideas what may be wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the shift forks look good you may want to pay closer attention to the shift shaft "grabber" and where it is attached to arm.... Sometimes they can develop play and bind itself on the outside of the pins of the shift star. Also, I had a problem with the "grabber" actually spinning itself a full 90 degrees and wedging itself in between the pins on he shift star (despite the stopper that should prevent that) There is a cam lobe, off center, type of adjuster that also needs to be dialed in to eliminate differences in up and down lag @ the shift star. this is located closer to the back of the motor and is a flat head screw that comes through a cutout in the shift shaft arm, there is a locknut on this same screw that butts up to the case, to adjust obviously loosen the locknut and turn the flathead screw. As far as the shift star itself they were made w/ extremely tall arches.... A common modification is to grind these points down (on a bench grinder) and then smooth them out afterwards with a right angle die grinder (w/ a 3m gasket remover cookie attached) JUST LEAVE THE NUETRAL NOTCH ALONE... Do not do any grinding or removing of material there

Hope this helps, thanks for using the search feature first

thanks for the help grim reaper, i ground the shift star and tried it again, with the trannsmission gears out with just the shift drum in it i can shift threw all gears but when i put the tranny gears in it wont shift, all the gears are in good condition what should i look for on the shift forks?

Before we go any further you do relize that there usually needs to be hint of momentum in the final drive assembly for the trans to "click in" are you testing this stuff with the motor apart on a bench? With the forks, as long as they are not bent and they are free moving you should be good. and the gears themselves would actually show excessive wear or broken teeth if bad....

Check the shift forks for flat spots as they sometimes hang when trying to slide on the shift cam. The wear can be tricky to detect unless you have another good one to compare it to.

I am currently enduring transmissin repairs of the same as you speak. Mine was soo worn I needed an entire trans, clutch, primary gear etc... (( weeps )) I'll not continue =)

I hope to be riding soon

G Luck to you

yeah on one shift fork on the side of it there was a small amount of wear and it looked like it had been hot. but i went ahead and ordered all three just to be safe because i dont wanna have to split the cases again any time soon haha. Good luck to you also.
