benny26 Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 im new to the quad bike and especially the banshee experience but i have recently purchased one however i believe it to have been "thrashed" so i took it down to my local yamaha outlet to have it serviced and they have found that it has be run with fried rings doing damage to my pistons and the damage has extended into the cylinders. the bike is all stock and they have told me the cost of fixing it is about $3000 now i would say i know nothing about these engines but to me this sounds absured when i look around on the internet the prices of new piston heads +kits is like $150 is it possible just to re-sleeve the cylinders and put new pistons in as i said i dont really no anything about engines so any help would be much appreciated Quote
bansheefreak Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 buy a clymers manual and fix it yourself you can put used jugs ,new pistons, everything you need for under 1000... but my guess is if it runs right now. but needs a rebiuld you can get bore and pistons for 250 300 bucks.. Quote
bansheeseat$$ Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 3k no freakin way!!!!!!!I spent less then that to build my cub engine. It shouldn't cost anymore then 500 bucks at most.I would not have them work on it period.....JMO Quote
benny26 Posted September 6, 2008 Author Report Posted September 6, 2008 yeh thats what i thought i dont know if its any different in australia but everyone is useless for information and stuff over here i have found this site more helpful then the local bike shop lol anyway so if i do it myself i just gotta get new/used jugs and get new pistons? shanYE west Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 yeh thats what i thought i dont know if its any different in australia but everyone is useless for information and stuff over here i have found this site more helpful then the local bike shop lolanyway so if i do it myself i just gotta get new/used jugs and get new pistons? probably only need a bore job and some pistons.. you'll know more once you get the cylinders pulled off and look them over. i'm not sure what the price difference would be but over here you should beable to get it all done for under $300 US. After you pull the cylinders off your going to need to measure the bore to find out what size pistons you'll be needing.. (depending on the damage) then once you get the pistons you just take the pistons in with the cylinders, or if you dont trust anyone local you can always send them out with the pistons to be bored. benny26 Posted September 6, 2008 Author Report Posted September 6, 2008 yeh i was quoted $500 just to bore out both cylinders which is prob bout $550-560US from yamaha im guessing ill be better off finding a specialty shop somewhere else. so if the ones i have are scratched then they need to be bored but if i had others that weren't scratched i would just need new pistons right Quote
bansheeseat$$ Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 If you got different cylinders you would at the least need to have them honed to remove the taper from them so the new pistons would fit properly. Quote
benny26 Posted September 6, 2008 Author Report Posted September 6, 2008 okay so i might as well just have mine bored then and get new pistons what size do u recommend Quote
shanYE west Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 okay so i might as well just have mine bored then and get new pistons what size do u recommend Only go as big as you need to clean up the cylinder walls.. its going to depend on how bad the damage is.. Quote
