  1. I agree. I tried to tap mine for the next larger size and the nut broke loose. I was stuck with a tap that I couldnt remove because the insert would just spin in the hole. I drilled through the frame and removed the nut and tap and then welded a grade 8 - 1/2" nut in its place. You will have to drill the holes in your footpegs a little larger for the 1/2" bolts, but you will not have to cap the frame with washers because the nut will fill the hole. Install some new 1" long grade 8 1/2" bolts and you will never have to worry about loose pegs again! Total cost about $12.00 for the bolts and a couple of beers for the welder. BTW True Value carries hardened bolts. Personally I would not use a heli coil unless you ride sitting down. There is only about 2 complete turns of thread in the stock nut - that is why they strip out so easily!
