From the way you describe it, the head studs have probably been heli-coiled in the past. Those "spring looking coils" are probably heli-coils themselves that unscrewed with your studs. Post some pics and someone will confirm. If that is the case, all you need to do is get that size heli-coil and screw it back in. Piece a cake.
