  7. Description A marketing brochure released by Microsoft appears to be putting an end to the debate about backwards compatibility for its next-generation, XBox 360 console. The marketing material released attempts to describe the features of the two versions of the console that will become available on its launch in November, 2005. The brochure includes various diagrams and tables describing the console and one of them (image to your right) explains that backwards compatibility with original XBox games will only be available to those X360 owners who also have a hard drive. Although details of the level of backwards compatibility of XBox 360 have been scarce, it was always assumed that some sort of extra requirement would be imposed on the console's owners. Microsoft had already mentioned that paying the relevant rights to publishers and developers might be an issue but support for past XBox games also had to depend on previous requirements for those games. There has been a suggestion that MS may be adding a fee to the hard drive that will take care of any charges which may become involved. It would also seem likely that since games like Halo and Halo 2 require a hard drive on the original console, they would do the same for the new console. Some experts also claim that the hard drive may be necessary in order for certain game-specific files to be downloaded from Microsoft so that original XBox games can be played on the new console but the fact that the brochure does not mention that XBox Live is a requirement for backwards compatibility makes this possibility unlikely. So gamers who wish to carry their current XBox library over to the new console may have to come to terms with the possibility that backwards compatibility comes at a price.
  8. grahpics info Description Although we reported yesterday on potential availability issues with ATIs R520 flagship boards, it seems that there will be no such problems with the company's Xenos chip for the XBox 360. With a worldwide XBox 360 launch rumored to take place around Thanksgiving, plans for the console's components and their production are already well in place. ATI has made certain that it has done everything right on its side and it is expected to have plenty of boards ready for X360. The latest news from the console wars front suggests that ATIs X360 chip may have an advantage on performance over its nVidia PS3 counterpart and 4X anti aliasing, for example, is something that it will be able to deliver smoothly while the PS3 component will not. Xbox 360 will feature 48-pipelines compared to PS3s rumored 24 and its graphics processor will have 10 MB of EDRAM so we are guessing that graphically it may be able to produce much more than MS has let on so far. One reservation regarding the X360 however is how well ATI will pull off the unified Shader Architecture that combines pixel and vertex pipelines. If that works, than nVidia's dedicated extra 6 vertex pipes will not cause X360 much concern. Microsoft is already urging developers to take advantage of Xenos' high-specs by asking them to create native FSAA 2X and 4X games. Microsoft knows that it will have to make the most of its head start and the possible graphics advantages as quickly as possible since developers will slowly become more familiar with PS3s 7-processor architecture and will soon catch-up to, if not overtake, X360 performance wise. Initial plans for Microsoft call for a 50 per cent market share with X360 although a 35 per cent figure would seem more sensible. If Microsoft does make it with its console, it will owe a big thanks to ATI and its component which the company has produced in a responsible and timely fashion, unlike its current generation PC components.
  9. show that sony is all promises and no show Description During Sony's PlayStation 3 announcement at E3, the Japanese electronics giant made it clear to everyone that the new console would debut at the Tokyo Games Show. TGS has been and gone however, and no one got the anticipated glimpse of PS3 in action. Sony, instead, showcased a few videos of game footage, including the impressive MGS 4 trailer. Impressive though the footage was, the lack of an actual working prototype of the console at TGS has raised some questions regarding the release time-frame for PS3 which Sony had not addressed until now. In the latest issue of the Japanese Famitsu, Sony Computer Entertainment Corporate Executive Masatsuka Saeki, was asked exactly why the company failed to present TGS attendees with a working PS3 console. His reply was that Sony had the ability to demonstrate playable PS3 games at TGS but decided not to do so since this would be the first official PS3 event on Japanese soil. Mr. Saeki seems to claim that Sony wanted to steer gamers along the same course that industry members have followed i.e. videos released first working console later in order to build up to the release of PS3. Although this sounds like some form of a plan, Mr. Saeki really fails to mention that most gamers were kept well informed of what went on during E3 and attended TGS fairly well versed in the E3 videos of the console in action. Mr. Saeki also goes on to suggest that he understands that a live demonstration of playable games would have had an even greater positive impact on the public's perception of the new Sony console. If you are confused this far then get ready for further frustration as Mr. Saeki could not confirm a date for PS3s first showing although he did claim that the February 2006 event expected to be the first demonstration of PlayStation 3 in action has been cancelled. Instead, the Sony exec claims, SCE will host a special event which will stun and impress gamers worldwide, although he refused to go into further detail.
  10. older artical but still a good one Description If you are one of the many gamers who seem to spend sleepless nights wondering which next generation console will be the most powerful, maybe you would value some input from John Carmack who, unlike most of us has already had a chance to play around with both consoles. Now that the Doom movie is about to premiere, the iD bigwigs are doing the media rounds in order to big up the movie and their range of products. G4TV hosted a discussion with iD software's big four, inevitably the interview strayed to the next-generation consoles. iD game programmer and co-founder John Carmack, made it clear that he is an XBox 360 fan this time around claiming that Microsoft has made the better choices for this round of the console wars. Mr. Carmack made a point of praising Microsoft's apparent love for the developer by stating that ...Xbox 360 has far and away the best development tools. When asked directly whether he thought PS3 would be more powerful than x360 Mr. Carmack said, ...PS3 is probably marginally more powerful, in terms of raw flops and graphic operations, but that
  11. yes they are both backward compatible
  12. price cost A new survey by Merrill Lynch suggests that Microsoft's XBox 360 will become more popular with gamers, mainly due to its price. The latest information about Sony's PS3 online strategy for games will also not help if it is shown to be true. According to Merrill Lynch there exists a huge cost difference that may see X360 selling at half the price of PS3 by the end of 2006. The investment company analysed the components for both consoles and their cost and suggests that, PS3 will not only be significantly more costly than Xbox 360 at launch, but will continue to operate at a cost disadvantage for several years. Merrill Lynch seems to suggest that the price for PS3 may be as high as USD 500 at launch, in spring 2006, while X360 may be selling for as low as USD 249 by then. Microsoft has announced two versions of the XBox 360 console which will be priced at USD 300 (standard edition) and USD 400 (premium edition). According to the survey up to 10 million X360 consoles could be sold by the end of 2006, something which would mean that Microsoft may be able to lower prices even further. The main point made by the survey is the risk that Sony is running by using the Cell processor. A lot of a manufacturer's pricing flexibility comes as a result from increased usage of a part but Merrill Lynch claims that Sony's chances of convincing manufacturers to use the Cell processor outside the PS3, are slim. Apple for example has moved away from IBM and is expected to be using Intel processors by the end of 2007. The survey suggests that the Cell processor will cost Sony USD 160 per chip while MS will have to pay USD 100 for its PowerPC while Sony will also have to dish out USD 75 for the privilege of using a Blu-Ray drive on PS3. All this information, coupled with Sony's weakened financial position and Microsoft's head start, suggests to the investment company that X360 will take a comfortable lead in the next-gen console wars. New information, suggesting that Sony has chosen not to offer a centralized online gaming to PS3 owners, has caused further grumpiness among analysts since it will be up to each developer to offer an online service and to, possibly, a separate fee for every game. This choice would make things easier for Sony as each developer will be ultimately responsible for the quality and cost of the service it offers but gamers may need to have a separate account for each game and may have to pay extra to enable online play for each game. This information however, remains a rumor until Sony decides to release some further PS3 information.
  13. E3 2005: Microsoft's Xbox 360 vs. Sony's PlayStation 3 With Sony's specs out, Microsoft has sent us its a comparitive analysis. What's the outcome? by Douglass C. Perry May 20, 2005 - It's 3:30 pm on Friday, May 20, the last day of E3. The fine PR folks from Microsoft, who invited us to their headquarters a week before E3 to show us their system, their specs, and the grand design behind their powerful new Xbox 360, have just sent us an urgent notice to update our specs with new information. Earlier in the day, we were sent a comparative analysis of the Xbox 360's power vs. the PlayStation 3's power. We decided to put this Microsoft-provided information up undigested. Thus, enclosed is a Microsoft-made comparitive analysis. We have not altered, added, or tinkered with the data. We have not interpreted the specs. We have cut and pasted this information from the email into our site and formatted it. Make of it what you will, but be clear we know Microsoft has clearly slanted this info, and we're not endorsing it, just printing their version. There is a difference. XBOX 360 / PLAYSTATION 3 PERFORMANCE COMPARISON SUMMARY Now that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 specifications have been announced, it is possible to do a real world performance comparison of the two systems. There are three critical performance aspects of a console: Central Processing Unit (CPU) performance. The Xbox 360 CPU architecture has three times the general purpose processing power of the Cell. Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) performance The Xbox 360 GPU design is more flexible and it has more processing power than the PS3 GPU. Memory System Bandwidth The memory system bandwidth in Xbox 360 exceeds the PS3's by five times. The Xbox 360's CPU has more general purpose processing power because it has three general purpose cores, and Cell has just one. Cell's claimed advantage is on streaming floating point work which is done on its seven DSP processors. The Xbox 360 GPU has more processing power than the PS3's. In addition, its innovated features contribute to overall rendering performance. Xbox 360 has 278.4 GB/s of memory system bandwidth. The PS3 has less than one-fifth of Xbox 360's (48 GB/s) of total memory system bandwidth. CONCLUSION When you break down the numbers, Xbox 360 has provably more performance than PS3. Keep in mind that Sony has a track record of over promising and under delivering on technical performance. The truth is that both systems pack a lot of power for high definition games and entertainment. However, hardware performance, while important, is only a third of the puzzle. Xbox 360 is a fusion of hardware, software and services. Without the software and services to power it, even the most powerful hardware becomes inconsequential. Xbox 360 games
  14. This is untrue. the 360 is being compared to the newest computers on the market at this time with built in hard drive and built in graphics card they say the 360 has about 1 ghz on the ps3 as of now. the 360 also come with a built in hard drive witch the ps3 it was just cut out so to get a hard drive you have to pay a extra 100 bucks and its external that stinks. right now i own a ps2 and xbox. and they both have great games. but i have had problem with the ps2 it has a write 2.06 error when reading dvd games. and right after 5 months after i got it. so i call up sony they want me to send it back to fix it and charge me 170 buck not including shipping. what bs i told them i can go buy a new one and save me the headache. they were very happy when i said that. bunch of dicks. i loved ps1 and ps2. And with the ps2 the promise everything and then cut it to make the dead lines. Like on the ps3 they were going to have a built in router and or built in wireless card that was cutout. i have never had any problems with my xbox and it get used 10x as much as my ps2 by my son. xbox carries better titles. so that being said im going to buy a xbox 360 and not support sony anymore. i will post up some articals about both systems and specs.
