Poor Mans AxeL Lock Bolt

had a instant message over someone whom seem'd upset i did not tighten his axel nut tight enough so i figured i would post a thread on my " poor mans lock axel " of how i do it

 

 

TIGHTEN BOLT till u think its tight enough

 

 

 

once they are " tite " wrap with color of choice electrical tape to match your bike , make sure the tape overlaps onto the axel .

 

 

 

never had a problem with my little rig and it works quite well... Suppose you could do it the right way and use lock tite , but tape is just that much more cool.

hmmm,i tried that at the drags a couple years ago and the nuts still came loose and with the tape there you won't reaaly notice till you remove tape or its to late.i think a couple drops of locktite is much better and worth while. just my .02 worth

everyones got there own style , when locktites not avalible and you want to RIP IT !!! TAPE IT !

i usually just take a sharpie and draw a line across the nuts, and check it frequently to see if it has moved. of course you need to recoat the line occassionally to see it though.

wow milo thats brilliant , im going to do that now... sometimes u can tell if they are getting loose by when the tape looks like its stretching . None the less thanks for contributing your 02

Well, what I do is I take a 5 lb . sledge hammer and a center punch and WHACK!! a Big O' GnArLeY ding in the threads so that them thar nuts aint never gonna slip.

that mite cost more then 4 cents , when you gotta replace some carrier bearings

LOL chase you come up with some pretty wild stuff you do in a pinch. I guess if it works, it works. I've fought with them over and over and over again in the past. Any more I just clean the hell out of the threads and put some blue locktite on there then crank them down to spec and never both with them again.

 

Props to you man, you come up with some crazy ideas and some cool ones.

thanks big red , i really take pride in my rigs. Aswell as it means alot to me when a contributing member like yourself tell's me you like the ideas . I figured out this little rig when my axle nuts came loose on the trail and the only thing i had was a rench and electrical tape . Thanks for the post buddy .

Actually that's not true. If you have crap on the threads, oil/grease/etc even if you tighten them to spec they can still work lose sometimes. The vibration on the axle is pretty good at messing lots of stuff up. If your threads are all perfectly clean it might hold. I've had them work lose with clean threads and torqued to spec in the past. I use blue loctite now and haven't ever had a problem with them.
