blueovalboy50 Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 Well here is the deal. I was out riding yesterday and the motor went high idle for about 1 second and then shut down. I then tried to Kick it and tried to start a couple of times and then locked up. By that i mean the kick start wouldnt move. If I move it with my hand it eventualy moves a little father each time. but stays puy after that. So I got it back to the house and strted to dismantle and when i removed the left expansion chamber a handfull of metal that looked hammered came out. Some of it was aluminum but some of it looked brass or copper. Well I then looked into the left exhaust port on the jug and I can see the top of the left piston and it looks chewed up prety bad. Well it got late and That is were I quit I plan on complete dissasemble now and just wanted to see if anyone might know what i am facing here. The bike gave no warning of hint of failure. runs great always has. It has a .10 over bore with wiseco pistons and other than that the motor is stock. It also has k&n with no air box tors removed and boyseen rad valves and carbon reeds with Pro Circuit pipes. drained the oil and didnt look silver or have any metal in it butt it was a little dark outside so I will update the oil status. Please elt me know if you guys might know what has happened, Thanks Brian Quote
98_shee Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 sounds to me like it time to rebuild....i would tear the top end down and see whats going on it there....the pieces are probably part of your piston your probably gonna have to bore it and get a new piston kit Quote

Would any of the metal have gotten in the bottom? This Is my first bike only had it 6 months. Also how could I check to see if is th crank or crabk bearings? Or maybe a rod? What do I nned to look for while tearing down? Thanks Quote
crustydemon Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 Cylinder might be ok if your lucky. Mine did the same thing. Just had to get the aluminum smears off the jug and a light hone fixed it right up.Make sure you check everything out to find out why it leaned out so you dont do the same to your new top end. Quote

98_shee Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 You should get a clymers before you start the rebuild, if you don't have one yet Quote
blueovalboy50 Posted March 23, 2008 Author Report Posted March 23, 2008 You should get a clymers before you start the rebuild, if you don't have one yet I have the manual. does anybody know what would have casued this. well maintained bike. oil had one ride on iy. No warning or hint of anything. Quote
98_shee Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 How old is the crank, the rod bearings could of went out. it could be a number of things. you just need to open it up and see what happend Quote
blueovalboy50 Posted March 23, 2008 Author Report Posted March 23, 2008 well i pulled it all apart and the left cylinder is destroyed my head is destroyed and the left rod is frozen to the crank and looks scorched so i assume the rod bearing is toast. I guess the next question I have is what now? stock or stroker who to buy from what are the advantages of stroker versus cost. any help would be appriciated. thanks Quote

inthemail Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 i got tired of reading but yea, pretty nasty failure id say as soon as i read copper i thought rod..... go through the procedure in the clymer starting with the top end in frame, check your cylinders first and have them serviced accordingly. same goes for your head it may be ll marked up from piston chunks. from there on id go into splitting the cases, along the way find out why your kickstart wont work. perhaps a worn out idler bushing. then your going to be splitting the cases. sorry suse same thing happened to me, sometimes total maitenance misses bad things. run in bearings can cause disasters. have your crank checked for excessive runout if the bearings arent shot, your going to need new big end bearings anyway because of the lockup and the fact you found metal. your tranny and clutch side assemblies should be fine since the metal came out of the exhaust chamber, but like i said. check idler gear bushing and your kickstart assembly. you will inevitabley need, a rebuild kit according to your bore. possibbly a crank rebuild (time for that stroker or rebuild your stock one with longrods and the 795 pistons from wiseco. you will also need a clutch side gasket and idler gear fix. everything can be ordered from jeff @ FAST. F.A.S.T. RACING[/url'] sorry never read your last post, as far as cost goes jeff can probley hoo you up with a 4 mil hotrods stroker for about the same it would cost to have your crank rebuilt with the longrods (for use with 795 pistons i believe the 4mil stroker needs these too tho) you MAY get your grank rebuilt a shade cheaper tho. the advantage of running longrods is less side load on your pistons. njbanshee Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Do your self a favor and go with the stroker. Make sure its trued and welded. Get your cylinders bored and ported. Like everyone said call jeff. I just had him build my motor. He is fair and very helpful. Quote
