Today I was out riding my banshee with my boys and We started to drag a little. I raced my boy that also has a banshee and i must have slammed through the gears. Now my bike is stuck in 5th gear. I can get into 6 th and 5 th but that is it. Did I mangle the shift fork? Can it be the shift star? What do you guy think it could be and will I need to pul the motor and split the cases? Any info would help. Thank.

I would take the cluch cover and basket off and pull the shifting shaft out and make sure its not messed up before i split the cases, ive had one mess up on me its an easy fix if thats the problem

Look where it turns the star make sure its working, there should be a little spring that keeps it on the star. Here's a pic of where you should look, this is what was wronge with mine anyways

Let me know how it turns out

It was stuck in gear wouldn't shift at all, its not hard pull ur peg and cover off, take the pressure plate off, pull the clutch out and bend the tabs back on the basket nut, you'll need an 1"1/4 socket and an inpact to get the nut off, then pull the basket off and be sure to put the washer back when you put it back on or your clutch wont work right, then take ur shifter off, and pull the shaft out

Dont forget to drain your oil and coolant before you pull the cover off.

what were your symptoms? How tough is it to pull the clutch cover and basket?

Its not hard to pull the cover and basket off. Drain your oil and coolant. Remove your footpeg and brake lever/resevoir (not necessisary, but helps get the brakes out of the way to pull the cover) then undo the bolts around the cover. give it a good pull/pry it off with a screwdriver (be careful if you want to try and re-use the gasket). Once off, remove the 6-10mm bolts equally that are holding your pressure plate in. Pull the pressure plate off (be careful, sometimes a round bearing will roll out of the gear tube) then pull your clutch plates out. Get a 32mm socket and remove the nut holding the inner and outer hub in place. You will have to bend back a retainer washer that's locking the nut in place. You will have to hold the inner hub in place with something when you remove the nut (an impact gun is handy here) welding an old inner and outer plate together works well for holding everything in place while you remove the nut. Pull the innter hub off, remove the thick washer that sits behind it, remove the outer hub and the bushing it rides on. Then you can get to the mechanism you see in the pics above. cant remember if the kickstarter gear is in the way or not, but its easy to remove, just pull the spring off the little tab in the cases and pull it straight out. To remove it, just remove your shifter and pull it towards you, sitting on the clutch side of the bike. Check the springs and everything.

once you have it down this far, pull your shift star off and do the shift star mod. Also check your idler gear (up by where the kickstarter was) and make sure it doesn't wobble excessively. If it does, get a new c-clip, front washer and rear washer and either a new bushing for the gear or a whole new gear and replace the assembly. The idler gear is a commonly worn out part and will cause headaches when it wobbles excessively.

reverse the procedure to re-assemble. Only tighten the clutch bolts (the 6 10mm ones) to about 7 to 10ft lbs. any more and you risk damage to the inner hub threads. I'd recommend a new clutch cover gasket as well.

hell yea jared, great detail on that one, also good that you suggested to cut the shift star!! awesome job man!

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuukkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!! I pulled the cluch cover and basket, removed the piece that is in the pic higher in the post and I have the shift star visible. the piece in the above pic on my bike is fine. I grabed the shift star with a pair of pliers and it still will only let me fully engage one gear and 3/4 of the next. Now what? I believe I should start removing the motor to split the cases to peep the tranny. damm.

Yep, if your not having any luck with a simple fix with the shift star actuator, sounds like it might be time to split the cases and check your drum and forks and gear sets. Splitting is easy once you have the clutch stuff off. Pull your flywheel and timing plate and top end...

I got the motor out and the whole clutch side off. I cant seem to get the flywheel off from the timing plate. I used an impact gun to remove the nut and I have a pulley puller on the flywheel and it wont budge even after i hit it with the impact. Am i doing something wrong? Can it be rusted together? It looks like a buch of rusty crud in there. I have it soaking in wdf40 right now. Is there somthing i am missing? Is there a special trick?

You need a flywheel puller thats made for that flywheel they thred into the flywheel and you screw a bolt in the middle and it pulls it right off, ive never had much luck without one, if you plan on doing your own work on the shee that a good investment, there only 10 or 15 bucks you can get them on ebay. (I wouldn't beat on the flywheel it can cause the magnets to break loose.)

so the puller is specific to thebanshee flywheel? The puller I have has two arms that hook on the back lip of the flywheel and it has a bolt that goes directly into the center of the bolt on the fly wheel. You tighten the middle bolt and it "should" pull off but this is not working for me
