lowbuckracing Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 Is the drag port only for wide open or does it allow you to still cruise through the dunes and not have to be on the pipe all the time,I mostly ride in Glamis and am looking to build a 4mil motor, what porting is still duneable but not have to be wide open? Thanks JB Quote
dajogejr Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 I know I sound like a smart ass when I say this...really, not trying to be. Get a dune port. Seriously... A good drag port has no bottom, little to NO mid, ALL top and a lot of it. You want average mid but still good top, pretty much a dune port! If the bike in your avitar is your duner, you'll be sorry. Those out of frame pipes are not made to take bouncing around like inframes are...keep inframes for duning, OOF for the strip. Quote

That was my 10m banshee,I just sold,I wanted to build something more dunable so I bought a stocker and am looking to build a 4mill for it.I have a one over bore on these cylinders now with single 35 and it runs good but nothing like my 10,So I want some balls but not where I have to be wide open all the time...Thanks for your knowledge and I know your not being a smart ass.I read about your motor a little bit...sounds like it rips.Did you get your 10 mil deal?,,,lowbuck out! sheefreak Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 If your emphasis is going to be mainly on drag racing you can get away w/a drag port. Different builders "Drag ports" are less radical than others. I have run a 4-mill Patriot stock cylinder drag port for the last 2 seasons. It dynoed at 83 horse and does fairly well duning wise. Like Dave has mentioned, you are not going to lug it around, but still a lot of fun on the dunes. Just remember the more radical you go on top, the more you lose on the bottom. Quote
BigRed350x Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 Get a dune port. I got a new set of cylinders done and its somewhere between a dune port and drag port and I ride it in the dunes all the time. Traded a set of woods port gorr cylinders for a set of dune ported gorr cylinders. Love it. I wouldn't try and run drag cylinders in the dunes. You will spend more time in and out of the throttle and using the clutch trying to keep on the ground & it wouldn't be much fun. Quote

Yep...ran it all year in 07, and just had it on the ice a few weekends ago. Once i got the compression/dome issue sorted, ripped pretty good all year. Definitely not a dune motor though...LOL.. As said, one builders drag port is another's dune port...just tell them what you want, go with a reputable name, you'll be fine. 10mm has some good pull on top end over a 4 mil...so, you won't be quite there... But, a well built 4 mil with a 1 into two carb will make a nice duner... Quote

race-a-holic Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 I totally agree.Make sure to talk with the person that will be doing your port work and make sure they 100% know what you want and what you'll be doing with the quad.If they are a good builder, they should know what type of porting you need for your application.
