Stellar Performance Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 I would llove to get some input here. I am sure that someone has had to have this question before. Anyways....Two weeks ago I took my freshly built 7mm Cub over to glamis and tuned her in on Race gas. Engine consists of 7mm cub with drag port, 20cc domes, vforce3s, billet seperated intakes, 36 pwk's with adjustable power jets....for ease of tuning, PVL set at about +5 degrees advance, Shearer Big Bore out of frames. She ran like a beast....keeping up with a 10mm cub on methanol. My bike is fully lightened....his was srock frame, etc. So Yesturday I took her out to Gordon's Well with some changes. 19cc domes, 38mm mikuni's with Dave Moore power jets and Billet Bowls, Advanced Timing a little More, and ran Methanol. I could not get her to run decent at all.......I mean she ran like crap. Sputtered.....fell on her face......Etc. What am I doing Wrong? Anyone with some decent Methanol Tuning please help. I am screwing up by advancing my timing? Can Someone help with what jets to start with on the mikuni 38's or even on my 36pwk's. PLEASE HELP Thanks, Tim Quote

Quote
Stellar Performance Posted October 29, 2007 Author Report Posted October 29, 2007 What are your mains and dumps drilled to? I will measure them....I know I am going to look stupid right now......but what are the dump tubes? Have always messed with Pilots, main, and have played with Adjustable power jets.....but that is it. Quote
Stellar Performance Posted October 29, 2007 Author Report Posted October 29, 2007 What are your mains and dumps drilled to? Okay....here is what I can tell you so far. The Mains have been drilled to .116 The pilots are only 32.5s The needle was set at position 2. Quote
Stellar Performance Posted October 29, 2007 Author Report Posted October 29, 2007 What are your mains and dumps drilled to? The Power Jets are adjustable, but I tried them at many different positions. I have always been good at tuning with gas.....but this is driving me nuts. Quote
Stellar Performance Posted October 29, 2007 Author Report Posted October 29, 2007 Oh Yeah.......she used to fire up on first kick......but now she takes quite a few to get her going. Is this common with running methanol? I wouldn't think so. I double checked my compression to make sure nothing was wrong there, and checked for spark too.......no obvious problems except my lack of knowledge with alcohol.....at least the kind you burn  Quote
dajogejr Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 Dump tubes are what your main jet screws into...and what your needle goes in and out of.. Get a drill bit, measure it's thickness...and get something that is snug in the dump tube. Measure that... Unless it's butt ass cold out or your bike is jetted wrong in the pilot/air screw, Methanol starts very easy. You mentioned checking compression and timing. What exactly are they both at? What is the elevation at Gordon's well..by the way? Need to know: Dump tube size Compression Timing Elevation... Quote

I believe Gordon's well is around 750-880 feet....... Dump tubes have a step in them......the slighly narrower section is on the top near the slide.....it measures right at .116 like the mains, but the lower half is larger and measures about .141 Quote
Stellar Performance Posted October 29, 2007 Author Report Posted October 29, 2007 Supposedly these carbs were setup by cascade innovations for a 4 mil cub to run in glamis. I figures they would only need minor tuning to make them run well on my 7 mil. Quote
dajogejr Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 That compression sounds a little low, what did you setup your squish at? On a Keihin carb for meth, you'd want .120 or .122 dump tubes, .117 to .120 mains... You're pretty much at the same elevation as me. On my 10 mil, I have .045 to .046 squish, 20cc domes and my compression is near 180. I'm not good with the aftermarket Mikunis.... You might want to post this question over on Planet Sand as well...there are a TON more people running meth with Mikuni experience. Quote

I have my 36mm that have the power jets in. What size pilots? I just thought that the 36's would be a little small for methanol. I guess they would help with some low end. I mostly hillshoot...not flat drag. Quote
dajogejr Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 For a 7 mil on Meth you want bigger than 36s. Plus, once you drill the dump tubes on Keihins, that's it. You can not replace them...like you can on Mikunis. I have 39PWKs setup for a fuel pump. I also have 41.3mm Lectrons that I'm very happy and satisfied with. I've had my 39s for sale, no takers. They work perfectly on my 10 mil, I just like the Lectrons better. Do you know how to setup a fuel pump? if so...would you like to try them...if they don't sell? I ran them all year, I recently got these Lectrons and you'd have to pry them from my fingers to give them up. Their simplicity and ease of tuning is awesome... In my 39's I run 55 pilots, .122 dumps and .117 mains. I have the Dave Moore Super Jets which I run 3 to 4.5 turns out. I did get greedy once this year and went with 48 pilots and 1.5 turns out on the PJs...and I broke a piston top off, and was lucky only to do that. Bidding on ebay ends in about 6 hours or so. If they don't sell...we would have to come to some type of agreement so we're both covered, but you could try 'em. I'll even make sure they're setup for you...rich, of course, but close. You'll have to run a fuel pump on these. The needle and seat are too small to flow enough fuel without the pump... The pump I use is less than 50 bucks.. Remove a reed cage, stuff a rag down in the intake, drill and tap it for a fitting to run a vacuum/pulse line, sealing it of course. Then use a shop vac to suck any shavings out...and slowly remove the rag. Takes no time... Quote

And my cylinder already has been drilled and tapped, just been plugged for now. What pump are you running. I know esr has a good one. Let me know...I am in no hurry since I probably won't be heading to the dunes again until early December or so. Sucks to have to say that, but my weekends keep filling up with things to do. My old MX quad was a fully built 440ex that I ran the 38hv lectron from Fast by Gast. It was easy to tune, but I always thought the Throttle pull was really stiff. I tried the soft pull spring from them, and that didn't help the idle to mid stiffness. Anyways, I might be intersted in the carbs. My bike is so damn clean looking right now without all of the other crap on it like a fuel pump, purge kit....etc. But I have always wanted to try methanol. I have never ran a properly tuned bike on methanol and am anxious to see how she runs on it. Quote

I run a Mikuni DF62, it's their high output pump, 65L per hour. Their other pumps flow 35L per hour. I live in Michigan...I don't want to hear about riding dunes or sand in November...ok?? :yelrotflmao: :yelrotflmao: I think mine have the easy pull springs, they pull easier than my Keihins do. You don't need a purge kit. Just get quick disconnects from Direct Drive. I have a single outlet stock gas valve, the fuel pump and that's it. No need for a dual pingle, etc. with a fuel pump setup done right. Quote
