hey guys,

I have bought a basket case banshee motor for a carton of beer that needs a crank. (the crank is actually gone lol, previous owner deemed it unusable and binned it)

Anyway I have got a crank off a bloke for next to nothing that he reckons is good, came out of a running motor that lunched the gearbox.

I know next to nothing about these things but very keen to learn. I have handled all the bearings and it seems to me there is a little sideways play in all of them (read very little, but still noticeable) there is also a little sideways play in the big end bearings ie I can grab the top of the rods and move them side to side a touch

Is this how it is meant to be?

Also what is the best procedure for cleaning up the crank and pre-installation prep etc

check the rods to see if they have any up and down play... move the rods side to side. they sohould move very little side to side. spin both otter bearings and listen to see if you can hear dirts or metal grinding.. if everything checks out you "should" be ok...

if the crank goes bad while running it it will destroy a lot of stuff and cost you a lot of money. thats what i'm doing now. the rod bearing started going and hammered the piston into the head, ruining both and scratching the cylinder up, and it could have been a lot worse. and when i shut it off it was running good and just making some noise. i bought an almost new crank and am having it welded at fast for $75. i wouldnt mess around with that crank if you can feel play. at least have a reputable builder check it.
