96_banshee_96 Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 Since I bought the basket case 87 shee I took a break on fixing my 96 that would pop and backfire at idle. Sice the 87 is now up and running strong as hell I decided to pull out the 96 and try to figure this out. Floats are within spec So I dont know why the one on the right only leaks  I have cleaned the carbs like 100 times with carb cleaner and compressed air. All new intake gaskets. Checked for cracks, chips in reeds, Replaced the plug caps with NGK caps, Just bought some 27.5 pilots and 340 mains threw them in today no change at all by the way im 560ft above sea level. Tried messing with the air screw with no luck. I sprayed some carb cleaner on the base of the cylinders,Intakes with no change in idle. I Have no clue whats wrong whit this beast execpt for maybe a airleak which I cannot find. Anybody have any ideas that I can try. Quote
theshee Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 Does it leak out the overflow tube?? Mine old carbs did that and the seat on the float was wore and make it leak out the overflow tube. Quote

Its pops and backfires on the right side and leaks gas out of the overflow on that carb only. Quote
Fireroad Express Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 like the shee said, worn float needle or seat. time for new ones. inspect the float needle closely. a ring or groove usually gets worn on them. if this is the case , replace it cause its not sealing properly. Quote
theshee Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 Yeah I would just snag a couple carb rebuild kits. They are like $20 bucks each and will get you all new stuff for the insides of your carbs. Quote
96_banshee_96 Posted June 30, 2007 Author Report Posted June 30, 2007 (edited) Yea thats what I will probly do. I took the flywheel cover off a little while ago and noticed that the timing plate is advanced 3 or retarded 3 I dont rember which one all I know was there was numbers on both sides of the plate so I dont know which one it was and the damn mosiquots(sp?) were going to town and I was getting eatin alive so I called it a night. The guy I bought the motor from said he never advanced or retarded the timing when I bought it from him. Would this cause it to pop and backfire? Edited June 30, 2007 by 96_banshee_96 Quote
