smokin 2 stroke Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 ok so im going to be painting my banshee frame soon and waswondering if anybody know anything bout paint..wut im wanting to do is have a blue frame but i want the blue to have alot of sparkle to it..i was looking at ppg and HOK paint. so wut would be a good primer/base the actual color and clear.any help is greatly apreicated Quote
lilbanshee Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 if you are aking it down to bare metal, first spray what is call self-etching primer. then spray primer surfacer thick enough to wet sand to make it smooth enough for a nice base coat. then spray base, color sand, then spray clear. i used zip cure clear from finish pro on the last car that i painted, and it turned out pretty good. the biggest thing is not running the base coat because the metal flake will have thick spots that wont go away very easily. oh, and make sure u wetsand the primer really good, especially in the joints because overspray builds up and will make the finished product look like shit. I paint cars for a living, so i think im right on this, but if anyone has any corrections, feel free Quote
allstarbanshee Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 Hey Smokin, I own a Powdercoat shop in Arkansas, Go ahead and strip your frame all the way down and have it sandblasted and Powdercoated, ONLY way to go. Not to mention any GOOD Powdercoat shop has a huge selection of color. I can put a $40,000 bass boat to shame on sparkles..I can powdercoat just like a bass boat or I can get flakes 2x and 3 x the size of metalflake in boats. If I did your frame in a blue sparkle to sandblast to bare metal powdercoat and clear coat your looking at bout $400. how much you gonan spend in primers and paints? not to mention man hours of cleanin and preppin? I can start to finsih in bout 3 hrs. Just givin ya a thought to think about. Justin Quote

allstarbanshee Posted June 26, 2007 Report Posted June 26, 2007 Smokin... Take a look at NIC Industries, also called prismatic powders, theyre in Oregon. theyre kinda the leader in Powdercoating right now, I think youd be suprised at some of the flake theyre putting in powder these days, more than regular paint, just a thought. I paint cars for a living, so i think im right on this, but if anyone has any corrections, feel free I also am a painter and the steps here are correct, other than wet sanding the base... if it is applied correctly there is no need to sand. and also before you spray base over the surfacer, you need to spray a sealer to get an even color over the frame. I am a big fan of HOK... I've used ppg and found that it has a tendancy of lifting with the base... as far as what surfacer and clear to use, stick within the same manufacturer... if you use ppg , use strictly ppg, if you use dupont(which I also really like) stick with dupont clears and primers. This cuts down on some of the things that can go wrong. Edited June 28, 2007 by 00ultraz28 Quote
lilbanshee Posted June 28, 2007 Report Posted June 28, 2007 not trying to bash or anything, but i didnt know whether or not he could paint, and i figured if he was not experienced, he might run it it or whatever. and as for the sealer, as long as your dont sand through the primer, it should all be the same color, primer grey. right? yea, those steps are neccessary on a quality car paint job, but for the frame of a 4 wheeler that will get chipped and abused like a 4 wheeler does, i think you could get by just the same. and maybe save some money. or just powdercoat it. my buddies hill climbing bike has been powdercoated for 8 years, ridden every spring, summer, and fall, and it still looks great. it pretty kickin ass stuff! lol Quote
smokin 2 stroke Posted June 28, 2007 Author Report Posted June 28, 2007 yeah i know my other bikes are powdercoated but this is my DRAG BIKE ITS ONLY GOING DOWN THE QUATER MILE lol.. Quote
smokin 2 stroke Posted June 28, 2007 Author Report Posted June 28, 2007 (edited) this exactly the color i want or this Kandy Cobaly BLue Edited June 28, 2007 by smokin 2 stroke Quote
ghost rider Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 You might look into the House of Kolor line of paints. I know they have a majik blue pearl that would be a close match, but would have a pearl in it, kind of like "glitter". They also have a cobalt blue kandy base and an oriental blue kandy base that would probably match it closer. I know you can get that paint from eastwood or bearair.com. Quote
