dajogejr Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 Trying to get some work done in the garage, and I'm having a brain fart here. I've attached a picture, and I believe you need to loosen the locknut (A.), run it down the axle TOWARD the carrier, Loosen the nut ( same thing, toward the carrier, then remove the lock snap ring from the groove on the axle. Is this correct? I cleaned up the threads, soaked it in WD...but before I start reefing on it, just want to be sure. I had a locking pinch bolt on my shee before my current drag axle...this is a new one on me... Thanks... Quote
kaotik1 Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 On the inside (to the right) on nut "B" there is a retaining ring, pull that out. Then the nuts are reverse thread, loosen "B" then loosen "A" should come right apart. You will have to remove the hub to slide out the axle, and there is a larger C clip that colds the carrier in place, that will have to be removed to take the carrier out. Quote
dajogejr Posted April 9, 2007 Author Report Posted April 9, 2007 The "B" locknut it "over" that clip...and It can't come out. I thought the two locknuts applied pressure "against" that very clip? I'm gonna have to get a big pipe wrench...I found this on EX forums. http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php...p;threadid=1342 Quote
kaotik1 Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 What I ended up having to do was tighten the nuts down, remove the retainer, apply heat and everything came undone. It's a pain in the ass to do, and I trashed that lock nut set-up and went with the Tusk one. Way easier to put on and take off. Yes, "B" does cover "A" to apply pressure, but you loosen the "B" one first then, loosen "A" Exriders always messed up I got a time out error on that link. Quote
dajogejr Posted April 9, 2007 Author Report Posted April 9, 2007 Yeah, I'm thinking a pipe wrench and a torch are going to be coming very soon... ON EX riders they say loosen the inner nut first, reverse thread...than the outer... HMM....since I'm replacing the axle AND bearings, I'm about ready to cut the damn thing off...oh well. Thanks for the help!!! Quote
kaotik1 Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 Well if you need a stock axle let me know. I have the one I took out to replace it with a +4. Quote
SandShots Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 loosen the inner nut first. reverse thread. expose the clip, remove it, then the other nut comes out. have someone sit on the quad, put it in gear, with both brakes front and back on. You'll need a BFW to remove it. a BIG FUCKIN WRENCH. Quote
dajogejr Posted April 9, 2007 Author Report Posted April 9, 2007 Thanks...Kaotic. I got a used straight axle for 65 shipped. Ok shape, but the ends are a little beat on the threads. If it doesn't work, I'll take ya up on that. I'm hoping the carrier isn't shot...the bearings are that bad. Oh well, it's a play bike. Yeah, I'm going to get a big pipe wrench and a little heat. Just didn't want to start reefing on it...the wrong way... LOL... Quote
kaotik1 Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 For sure man, just let me know what you end up doing. This one I know is straight, it's off a 2002, that had 15 hours on it. The only problem is the quad sat outside without a cover so most of it was rusty... I replaced the carrier and the axle for a double bearing and a wider axle, to match the +2+1 front end. So I have a few parts kicking around should you need some things. Quote
400rednEX Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 dajogejr, you were right the first time. you have to spin the inner lock nut in, then spin the outer nut in so you can see the snap ring, pop the ring off and slide the collar out. the larger lock nut applies pressure outwards on the snap ring like you said. when you spin both nuts inward you will see the snap ring. Yeah, off to home depot again to get a big ass pipe wrench.... The channel locks I was using just aren't going to cut it. Man...I sure like how easy my drag axle is to work on. Hex nuts and aluminum pinch bolts....so much nicer!! Thanks!!! These are in fact reverse thread, correct?? Quote
dajogejr Posted April 11, 2007 Author Report Posted April 11, 2007 Thanks for the help...guys. A propane torch, 4 or 5 beers and some big channel locks later, all set. Just needed a little heat on her.... I should've taken a picture of the bearings, or lack thereof, that crumbled out of it. I thought the carrier was gonna be toast, think it's gonna be aiight.... Thanks again for the help!! Quote
