WinchedWolvy Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 as far as i can tell i need a top end but you guys feel free to take a look and see if you know what happened to the one i have,its torn up pretty good,i bought this a week ago hoping to put a top in it and ride it but dont know how much else it needs,doesnt look like any pieces are in the engine,i spun it around and looked with a light,this is not a show bike or a race bike,it does have some goodies on it though like v force 3 reeds, fmf fatty pipes and silencers,durablue axle,and some billet intakes,k&n filter, im maily concerned why the ring land busted on the piston though,Thanks in advance steve http://s132.photobucket.com/albums/q35/StevePatredis/ Quote

FireHead Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 The link is working now........ It looks like you the exhaust sides of the pistons have gotten pretty hot. Have you cleaned any of those parts up or are they the way they came out of the engine? I would say you have a fuel mixture or fuel delivery issue. :thumbsup: Quote

Kama Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 (edited) Well from looking at the pistons and the cylinder itself, I would say someone didnt take care of the air filter AND keep an eye on their cylinder compression. If you look real close you can see the lines from dirt that has passed through and grinded away. After a while it takes its toll and can wreak havoc on a top end. What I would do is have the top end bored a size over and check the cylinders for trueness. If the person was running a low octane gas they could have bottlenecked the cylinders from the overheating. And then get a new topend. If you live in Oklahoma, there is a great guy that will do your work and does a top quality job. www.passionracingengines.com is their link I believe and he has done at least 3 top ends for me. Put nothing but weisco back in tho. I made the mistake of using a different brand and had two sets either break or crack within 5 hours of use (one of which was in the middle of one of my races........). Since going to the weisco's I've had nothing but joy out of them. And make sure you use a dual stage foam filter and keep it maintained. It will extend the life of the top end. WinchedWolvy Posted February 9, 2007 Author Report Posted February 9, 2007 thats what i was thinking happened too,the air filter has the seal missing where the k&n pushes against the box and it flops all over the place,plus its a 2000 bike and looks like all stock top end,i wonder if i should rebuild the lower or just bore it and put a top end in it? i will definately be using wiseco parts though,i used them in my jet ski's and past motorcycles all through my life and they last and last,even when i was the young kid that didnt know when to let off. csrmel Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 if youre air filter was letting dirt by as you mentioned then that would wear the top end out quick. but nobody ever fucked up a ring like that because of a leaking air filter. that looks like a oil issue (or lack of oil issue) causing a partial seize. for sure the ring is seized, hell its pinched between layers of aluminum. sence the top end is shot, there are reasonable chances that the bottom end isnt too good either. all that piston, ring and cylinder matereal must go somwhere, most of it gets blown out the exhaust but some makes it way into the crankcase where its got a good chance of scoring some crank or rod bearings before it gets shot out of the tranfers into the combustion chamber and out the exhaust. not only that but ALL of that dirty unfiltered air that wore out youre top end had to pass through the crankcase and crankshaft before it even touches the piston rings and cylinders so id bet theres atleast some crank damage. maybe its not too bad, but you need to check it and determine if you need crank work before putting the engine back together. i would remove the gastank, flip the banshee upside down and FLUSH the crankcase/crankshaft area out really good with some brake cleaner followed up by wd40. put a clean white rag under the rods as you are squirting brake fluid around so you can see if any metallic shavings or flakes run out. check the reeds closely as well. dirt can act like a sandblasting medium on the reeds and erode them over time. also now is the time to rebuild the carbs. no doubt theres atleast some dirt up in the carb barrels and probably down in the jetting circuits as well. WinchedWolvy Posted February 11, 2007 Author Report Posted February 11, 2007 i took the engine out and im going to split the case to clean and check clearances,then im going to get the crank welded and trued,and then add a trinity 2into 1 carb and add a fresh top end with bore job,the k&n air filter had a bad seal so im sure it needs to be gone through completly,i want to put new bearings in the lower anyway,looks like i need to make some overtime cash to get it done before summer,it will take longer but it will be right when im done,thanks to everyone for responding to this post,steve Quote
