love2ride06shee Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 Hello every one.Im new 2 this site( GREAT SITE) MY question is how moucth timming can i advance and wen i do if i will have 2 change my jetting and gas? stock 06 t5s ,2:1 high flow toomey intake kit, main 280, pilot 25,needle 4th groove on 92 octane. elevation about 230 above sea level, temp.40-60winter 80-105 summer. I will be riding it most in the dunes (pismo). THANK U ALL IN ADVANCE! Quote
dajogejr Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 Put bigger mains in first. 280's are too small for no air box, even though they came in the jet kit. 320 to 340 is the norm. You said Toomey 1 into 2 high flow, I assume you mean their 1 into 2 foam filter that removes the air box all together, right? No one can tell you for certain how much timing and compression you can run for sure before needing more octane. If you leave the compression stock, and advance the timing +4...you should be ok, but...LISTEN to your motor and check the plugs often. The motor will tell you if it needs more octane..but, not for too long! Once you get the jetting spot on, you rarely have to change the jetting with a timing or compression increase... Quote
love2ride06shee Posted November 15, 2006 Author Report Posted November 15, 2006 thank u for your reply dajogejr i was hoping 2 get your 2cent on my question. when i pull the plugs what do i look for or will i have to do a plug chop to achive the perfect jetting? also for what type of noise should i listen for when i advance timing? dont know 2 motch about 2 stoke sorry. i wanted to go with the k&n pods off the carbs but toomey told me that it would actualy hurt the performace due to unbalance air draw & that a 1 into 2 high flow kit would work better i think they were just tring 2 sell me their product what due u thing? i have gone through 4 tanks on stock bike & 1/2 tank with mods when do i know it has ben broken in? plans for future mods: port & polish & shave stock head want it 2 look stock & as reliable as possible but still be faster than the shees wth just ad ons. is this a good upgrade? Shee-Male Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 watch for spoting on the plugs, pinging. Pinging is what you have to listen for, the name is missleading, it sounds more like rocks in a coffee can. Pinging is also called detonation or preignition, it's when the fuel is burned before the plug fires due to increased cylinder temps, higher octane helps slow the combustion proccess. I can't see the whole unbalanced air thing from pod filters, remember there is a balance tube right behind the carbs. The engine is broken in within the first 10 minutes when the rings seat to the cylinder wall, don't be affraid to beat on it...seriously. welcome to the HQ  Quote
dajogejr Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 Yep....your engine is MORE than broken in. I had the pods and Toomey filter (foam 2:1) and they didn't make a bit of difference, one to the other. I just had 'em both for long trail rides up north last year, when the pods get dirty, I'd switch...vice versa. However..mine's no trail machine anymore. Here's the plug chop, and it ONLY dials in the mains. http://www.dfn.com/benkaren/plugchop.html Quote
love2ride06shee Posted November 15, 2006 Author Report Posted November 15, 2006 thank u for the plug chop link. 1 moore question how do i know if i need 2 change the pilot and move clips on the needle or do i even have 2? sorry for not knowing 2 mouth about jetting im just trying 2 my shee 2 run like she should run. THANK U VERY ,VERY ,VERY ,MUTCH FOR YOUR HELP IT IS GRAETLY APRICIATED!! Quote
dajogejr Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 Tell you what, look at the jetting links in the stickies across the top of the page. I think you will gain and absorb plenty of knowledge from that alone, rather than one of us retype everything all over!! Quote
love2ride06shee Posted November 15, 2006 Author Report Posted November 15, 2006 OK I WILL FOLLOW THOSE LINKS AND READ UP ON THEM. THANK U DAJOGEJR FOR ALL YOUR HELP. Quote
dajogejr Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 welcome, I love to type...but, I think they can explain it in detail much better than I could attempt to. Why reinvent the wheel...right? Quote
