All of the above, and sometimes more. Bend rods, spin bearings, separate at the journals.

Throw a rod, put a hole in the cases....

 

It's spinnin from 1000 to 10000 RPMs or higher...it can get messy!!

I ran the living $hit out of a stock crank for 9 years, before replacing it. I was getting some bad vibrations, so I changed it out, and good thing I did, because the clutch side bearing was going out. You never know how long something will last. Take care of your stuff, and chances are, it will last a good long time.

If you look in the owners manual and i think on yamaha's website it states that there is no warranty's on a banshee. Anyone who buy's a waranty on a banshee is stupid. It is just another way for the dealer to make a few more hundred dollars. Even with othrer quads if you go to get your shit warantyed the dealer is gonna jerk you and make up some bullshit and say that it dosen't cover your problem and you end up paying full price with the chance that you might save a few dollars. I've know people that where in this situation. It is unnessasary to weld a crank if you just have pipes

 

In all don't buy a waranty on a quad its a waste of money.

Ya know...there is a couple of ways you could've put that....but just calling him stupid for buying a warranty isn't very smart.

 

Also...any reputable builder will tell you it should be welded, they've all seen 'em break on BONE STOCK BIKES...yes, those without even pipes. Are you increasing your chances with more mods...sure... But saying it is unnessesary with only pipes is bad info as well....

 

I would never buy a warranty either, unless I had a 10K 4X4 utility quad or such, they're worth every penny of the warranty, but..I wouldn't call someone stupid, especially since they asked a legitimate question....

your " warranty" is only as good as your dealer my dealer has coverd many repairs that were out of warranty that other dealers would not have covered . if you have a good dealer support him and he will take care of you . theres no excuse for a shitty dealer or poor service take your buisness some where else. i drove past 3 yamaha dealers 3 hr drive to a dealer that wanted my buisness and would do it again some people care about there customers others just want to screw them and make the fast buck

I guess your right i could of put that in a better way and NO, I was not saying that he was stupid as a person. Its just that others and myself will agree that it is a "stupid" move to get a warranty on a quad, especially a banshee. Unfortunatly many people buying a new quad feel that a warranty is a good idea but they really don't know that its going to live up to thier expectations.

 

I am still going to have to disagree with welding the crank with only having pipes, especially if its a new bike. Everbody whether rider, dealer, machinist is going to have a different opinion. I know that majority of people who just have pipes and filter do not have thier crank welded. I can't see someone that would waste the money and or time on taking a brand new engine apart to weld a crank just for pipes. Yes, cranks still fail, even stock but there are always going to be engines that are not broken in correctly, insufficent oil ratio, bikes that are lemons, etc... By saying that i am giving " bad info " is not true its just my opinion. Down the road if they bump up the comp., porting, and what not then the crank should be welded. Majority of people that just have pipes and a filter do not have thier crank welded nor would they waste money at that point in time.

I've read a lot of top builders seeing separated cranks on stock bikes when they came in to get porting, etc...

 

I agree....stock motor porting, stock compression and minimal timing, with pipes...you're probably safe. I ran my stock 96 motor on the stock crank until the beginning of this year, the motor was never torn apart or freshened up (yea, stock original pistons and everything.)

 

Bob @ R&B racing bought my stock crank, and said it looked just fine, I'm sure he welded it though as it was already on his bench....

 

I see your point, just throwing some caution out there!!!

Yeah....I agree....

I wouldn't just go doing it either....but, if I were to port my stock cylinders OR run some compression through there requiring race gas, yeah....I'd get r done.
