DMAN94 Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 can i weld the case? my chain broke and bunched up on the counter sprocket. it didn't crack the case to the point of leaking oil. just part of the serial numbers broke off. a large enough area that just takles away from the bike. these cases are matched so its not worth it to swap out. so what options do i have if i want it to look nice again. thanks dman94 Quote

If its not leaking just take a dremel to it and clean it up a little bit and call it good. Maybe try jb weld or epoxy before welding. I had a warrior with a busted case and epoxy filled the cracked out hole for 3 years before I ditched that thing. Quote
David Keith Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 Yes it can be TIG welded. But the case ahlves have to be split entirely. You also may have to machine on the opposite side of the weld where it burns thru. If you choose to have it welded, find an experienced welder. Quote
dajogejr Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 If it's not leaking, and it's definately not a stress point...JB Weld it. I had an old LT250R quadracer that popped a chain, leaving a penny size hole in the case. Back when I was 15 and poor...I took some copper and JB Weld, cleaned the surface off all oil and greast and JB'd it. Held up fine for years after.... JB weld is great for stuff like this, but it's critical both surfaces are clean!! Quote
DMAN94 Posted August 15, 2006 Author Report Posted August 15, 2006 thanks for all the advice, i will just jb weld it. its all just cosmetic. thanks dman94 Quote
ojcool Posted August 16, 2006 Report Posted August 16, 2006 thanks for all the advice, i will just jb weld it. its all just cosmetic. thanks dman94 You can weld aluminum with a MIG welder. You need to run strait Argon though. Quote
FireHead Posted August 16, 2006 Report Posted August 16, 2006 IF you do decide to weld it, make sure that the area soaks in acetone for a good long while. Then you will need to rough it up with a sander. It's amazing the kind of crap is present in cast ally. Quote
