Just picked up 99 shee from an old friend and am having problems with the headlights. At first, one of the headlights didnt work. So I unplugged the headlight and plugged the harness from the other one into that one and it worked. So I figured something was wrong with the harness for that one. I went riding and in the middle of my ride the other headlight went out! I traced the wires into where they join the rest of the wiring harness and didn't see anything that looked obvious. Any ideas?

Ok, I completely removed the wire harness that runs from the taillight to the front of the quad and took all the tape off of it. The good thing is that it looks mint. All the factory splices look mint, all connectors seem good, etc. I'm going to re-wrap it and put it back on. The only other thing that I can think of would be the wire harness that runs from the handlebar down the front. I briefly checked that out yesterday and it seemed OK though. Any other thoughts? The quad runs perfectly other than this.

Two ideas for you... First it may just be a bad ground or a bad connection where the harness plugs together. Clean all connections and try again. Next would be the stator. The stator has an ignition side and a lighting side. You'll have to pull the flywheel to inspect the stator and see if possibly you can see something there. Other than that, borrow a friend's stator and see if the problem dissappears with the borrowed stator. If it does, there's your culprit.

Ok, after posting I actually went and completely removed the main wire harness and took off all the tape and checked each wire and connection, cleaned them, then re-taped it and covered with a nice wire cover. I only saw one ground, located near the tail-light. After putting everything back together I regained power to the one headlight that worked before, so that must have been caused by a bad/dirty connection.

Tomorrow I will take off the flywheel and check the connections near around the stator. I dont have a stator I can borrow to try your other idea out though. If I dont see any problems around the stator can I just splice the wiring from the one headlight to power the other one?

I just looked at the wiring diagram. From the factory, both headlights are spliced together after the dimmer switch. I would concentrate your efforts on the length of wires that go from that splice to the light that is not working. If you're getting power to one light, that proves your lighting coil is working. Perform a continuity test on each wire in that section to see if they are conducting electricity from the splice to the plug that the headlight connects to. The colors of the wires you are checking should be yellow, blue, and green as per the diagram I'm looking at.
