ogre03 Posted February 22, 2006 Report Posted February 22, 2006 (edited) If it doesn't already have them you need some aftermarket pipes and new air filter system, first. As far as cheap front shocks, a lot of people seem to be picking up yfz450 shocks on e-bay etc. and making those fit. E-bay is a good place to pick up parts, you can also check the for sale section in here too. There is usually a lot of good deals. If money is tight look for a used set of pipes, but pipes are a must. Is this bike all F'ed up? If not I see no reason to buy a new one. It would be cheaper to put your money into this one. Just my .02 Oh yeah, have fun! and welcome to the HQ Edited February 22, 2006 by ogre03 Quote
STREETSWEEPAZ Posted February 23, 2006 Author Report Posted February 23, 2006 It is in decent condition ....... My buddy has a YFZ & I know for a fact the he is buying new shocks but, im not sure if he will part with his ........ Why use his stock ones if He is upgrading to better anyways????? Would they really benefit me that much Vs a set of mid grade Elkas or Works ???? I can afford good parts/ Just not the top of the line !!!! I hear BS about the J arm suspension & everyone is hootin & hollarin to convert it somehow & thats a main concern with the bike !!!!!!! I just want something that will better suit my needs & if that means buying a newer one - I will do that ...... I can always, let my friends use it or give this one to my wife or to my younger sisters ..... They want to ride too so,,,, that is why i guess I hear that tooney pipes or CPI's are good ??? Is there a certain Pipe that i should look into for my power adder ?? I plan on buying new filters & all that asap - I just dont want to bottom out on every little bump & bog out when i give it gas to pull me out of a jump !!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for the forum welcome,,, BOB_T Quote
ogre03 Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 If you have the cash to buy some elkas then go for it. I'm not saying the 450's would be better than them, I thought you were trying to save cash. As far as what pipe to get, thats really a matter of preference. Different pipes have their own charictoristics (sp?). I have toomey, they are a more top end pipe. FMF seems to be a good all around pipe with more lower mid range, people seem to agree that the craftsmanship of the fmf's is a little lower, however they work very well. PT mids are expensive, but a popular woods pipe, and I've heard people say the PT high revs are actually a better all around pipe (not sure though). Once you get to CPI's and sheerers you are looking at drag pipes. They are more of a higher rpm pipe. I personally wouldn't wory about the J arms. I'd just start pending money on the one you have. The HQ is a great place for information, and after you stick around for a while you will notice you spend entirely too much time staring at these damn forum pages. Quote
STREETSWEEPAZ Posted February 24, 2006 Author Report Posted February 24, 2006 Well,,, I know that i will be investing up to a few thousand bucks into the entire bike before the snow melts up here(if i have to) .......... I just need feedback with riders who have actually experienced these upgades & Not just a salesman at our local powersports dealer trying to sell me everything in the damn store - Banshee parts to KX250 parts !!!!!!LOL!!!! Is there a kit to widen the front stance on my 87 with the J-Arm ?? I have not seen one anywhere on the net so far ................ Thanks again Quote
87badassbanshee Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 id rec.switching ur jarms over to aarms ihad about 200 bucks in doing the swap Quote
STREETSWEEPAZ Posted February 24, 2006 Author Report Posted February 24, 2006 Whats all involved ???? I have access to Cad/Cam & a plasma table & I am fairly good at fabrication ........ I have a shop customizing autos & such...... LMK if you happen to have any pics & that for ref's.............? thanks Quote
STREETSWEEPAZ Posted February 25, 2006 Author Report Posted February 25, 2006 What other means of widening the front end can i do ??? I have seen spacer kits on ebay for +3" or +5" increase........ I have read about flipping the rims & fabricating new arm mounts .......... What would be the best option ?? Im set on picking up a set of Toomey T5's or FMF Fatties I have an offer for some Boyesen power 2 stage reeds - Any opinions??? I do want a different set of handle bars ( I have Pro Taper on my Kx125) - Any suggestions on a similar bar or What about them flexx bars ??? --- Where can i go to buy any new parts that has a good customer service??? Im not comfortable buying from our local places because they are really shady people unless your are a "Somebody" around here........ Quote
STREETSWEEPAZ Posted February 26, 2006 Author Report Posted February 26, 2006 Well,,,I thought i had new RazR tires all around but, Some junk ass & beat up holeshot 18's & bogus front tires found thier way onto the bike before i picked it up ...................... Its all good tho -- & words of wise to all those who do shit like that to others : DONT LET YOUR FAMILY/FRIENDS KNOW ABOUT WHAT YOU DID OR WHAT YOUR DOING - THEY TEND TO "LEAK OUT" INFORMATION TO THOSE YOU DONT WANT TO FIND OUT....................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! & DONT PUT THE PARTS ON YOUR OWN F@#KING BIKE RIGHT AWAY !!!!!!!!!!!! Its funny , it really is - I knew something about the bike was wrong as soon as i walked up to it !!!!!!! Im not a fuckin idiot , Im very observant Quote
Wallrat Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 Wow...lots of questions. Most of the stuff you've asked about can be found by doing a search. You haven't asked anything that hasn't already been covered. I'll offer up a brief summary suspension-wise since that's your primary concern: J-arms blow. There's 1, maybe 2 manufacturers that offer extended j-arms but its really not the best way to go. J-arms put some weird stresses on the bike and you end up blowing thru bushings like crazy. Best idea is to either fabricate the rear mounts for the a-arms or buy an a-arm frame (they switched to a-arms in 92 I think). If you decide to weld it up yourself, easiest way is to find a buddy w/ an a-arm banshee and buy your a-arms. Then basically copy what's on the newer banshee and use your a-arms as a jig. Quicksand is probably the most popular a-arm maker on the HQ but there's several other good brands out there. For shocks, you're basically looking at different levels of quality/adjustability. Generally, I'd put em in this order: YFZ450's - good for stock a-arm length. Need to be re-valved for wider arms. Low end works - okay shocks, but nothing to write home about High end works - pretty good shocks Low end elkas - nice high end elkas - very nice TCS - Very very nice Axis - Some folks may disagree w/ my order but that's my own personal viewpoint so they can lick sack. STREETSWEEPAZ Posted March 1, 2006 Author Report Posted March 1, 2006 I have tried to do searches ... Matter of fact - I have spent hours upon hours trying to get as much info as i can ....... Truth - I bought a new house , live further out of town & i have Dial up !!!!!!!!!!!!!! So,,, It is about 5 times slower than when i lived in town................... I appreciate the info from everyone & i will look up other things as fast as i can in the meantime... Thanks tho I have up to a couple thousand to invest in the bike if i have to by summer......... Wallrat Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 (edited) Where are you located? Here's what I would do w/ a couple g's (w/ links where I could get em): Fab rear A-arm mounts - $100 Quicksand A-arms - $675 for chrome TCS Front shocks w/ rezzies - $875 TCS re-valved stock rear shock - $450 Right there you're looking at $2100. If you've got a few more bucks add in some stainless brake lines and swap the bushings over to bearings. I dunno how tight the trails are that you ride, but you might not want to go too wide.
