On my buddy's shee we we're riding ,took a break and he could not kick his shee over. The kick starter would not move.I thought the worse that the crank froze.BUT we pushed started the shee and ran just fine.He hammered it all day. With no problems at all.Weeks later he fired it up and didn't sound right. After a few rips around the yard it got worse. We broke the engine down and found three screws that hold the large gear to the clutch basket sheared. The bearings on the crank seem a little worn, but not locked up.

What could cause this??

Lots and lots of horsepower can do that.  Like in the 130 to150 range

Not with this one.He has pipes and that's it..

I'm thinking something locked up and started to shear the screws, but what....

Can't see the crank doing that and come loose and ran for the next 6 hours.

well!!! 6 months later we figured it out!!!! we took the motor apart this past winter and everything looked ok.Checked the bearings on the crank and even have my buddy at the dealer check it out all looked fine.Tranny looked good and so on.Anyways we honed and ringed it, slapped it together.Fired it up and in a insteant it was making some grinding noise(totaly a different noise than last year).sounded like it was in the tranny. So ya we crack the cases again seen nothing wrong.WTF....So we took the tranny apart, both upper and lower gears.Taking apart the lower gears we found the problem from the start. The shaft was F**ked and couple of the gears I.D. was F**ked.Flat out had a hard time getting the gears off the shaft.I'm asumming the tranny locked up and caused the screws on the basket to shear.and all down hill after that...
