Do you do the plug chop the same way with a banshee that you do with a motocross dirtbike? With a dirtbike you run it WOT in 4th or 5th gear for about 20 seconds, then kill the engine without letting the bike idle down or even slow down.

Next you either look down into the plug (the base of the porcilin insulator that is behind the threads, using a magnafying glass with light), or you simply cut off the threaded area of the plug. If the main jet is the correct size then you should have a carbon ring that is 1-3 mm high, extending from the base of the insulator upwards toward where the electrode sticks out.

Is this how you test the main jet with a banshee?

You got it. I would say that 1mm, or a very light and or patchy inconsistant ring is getting pretty lean and 3 mm is getting way too rich. 2mm is right on the money. I did a couple plug chops and got a ring that was not quite 2mm and not as solid of a ring as I expected and then ran on a dyno with a sniffer and came up with a WOT A/F that was about 1 main size too lean, at least for a recreation/play motor. I found that it was pretty difficult to really get a good look at the ring and measure w/o cutting a windo section out of the threads, at least when you are doing your final fine tune plug chop.

Should the ring start at the base? I have done this a couple of times and each time the ring started about 1-2 mm above the base and was about 2mm high.

You would think someone would be able to answer this. It makes me think there are a lot o people posting things on here, that they have read, but have never actually done themselves :shrugani:
