BALLSDEEPRACING Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 So I have had my carbs on and off a dozen times trying to fix this problem. When my bike is sitting and the gas is on fuel leaks out of the hose on the bottom of the carbs. I have tightened the screw in the bowls extremly tight and cant get anymore on them. Floats seem to be adjusted fine.......maybe im doing that wrong? What else may be causing this???? Stock carbs by the way.....thanks for the help Quote
wesw Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 your floats are not correct. i think its 16mm or something like that from the case to the float i dont know the exact number. you will need to bend the tab soem to where the floats close a little bit earlier. Quote
s-540 Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 dont tighten the bowl screws to tight or they will strip out the threads. Quote
s-540 Posted October 18, 2005 Report Posted October 18, 2005 also the seat in the floats could have dirt lodged in them to hold them open Quote
dawarriorman Posted October 18, 2005 Report Posted October 18, 2005 I wouldn't worry about it, turn off the gas when you stop riding. Mines done the same thing since I got it. I've cleaned the carbs, the floats are adjusted perfect, and it still leaks. Ive talked to a couple other people that have the same problems. If anyone knows a surefire solution I'll try it, but Im not losing any sleep over it. Quote
trex banshee Posted October 18, 2005 Report Posted October 18, 2005 i am pretty sure it may be your needle and seat(the little rubber thing with a tiny needle in it, that is in between the floats) not 100% sure but it is worth a try Quote

Oh, by the way, can I borrow about $400? Yeah they're on my wish list, along with about 3 or 4 grand in other stuff. All i need now is a good instant lottery ticket and i'll be set. Quote
BALLSDEEPRACING Posted October 18, 2005 Author Report Posted October 18, 2005 Yeah ive checked just about everything in those carbs. I think I can actually put them together blindfolded now Thanks for the replies, I ran them a couple times like this and had no problems. But when you get done riding and forget to turn off the gas, then come back to a puddle of V.P. under your bike. Well Im sure you all understand how frustrating that can be Quote
sheefreak Posted October 18, 2005 Report Posted October 18, 2005 For both of you who are willing to suffer through that pain in the ass of an inconvenience, it can only be three problems. 1,Your screw is stripped that is at the bottom of the bowl(drain). 2, your floats are adjusted wrong(most likely the problem), or 3, or your stopper is not seating to seal off the gas from your gas tank. I can almost guarentee your floats are off. Quote
BALLSDEEPRACING Posted October 18, 2005 Author Report Posted October 18, 2005 Well maybe im adjusting them wrong. Could someone explain how to adjust the floats properly. I would appreciate it thanks Quote
2003LimitedBanshee Posted October 19, 2005 Report Posted October 19, 2005 With the carbs removed, set them on your workbench (or table, whatever) upside down with float bowls removed. Now you need to measure the distance from the float bowl gasket surface to the highest point on the float. This distance is from the gasket surface on the carb so you either need to remove the bowl gasket, or add approx 1mm (your can measure to get exact dimension) to your measurement to compensate for the thickness of the gasket. I believe Clymers says the setting should be 21mm from the gasket mounting surface to the top of the float. If the setting is anything different you'll need to adjust (delicately bend) the tang that the floats attach to either up or down depending on your measurements. Make sure that you check both floats to make sure you did not twist the float mechanism when adjusting. With all of that said, my bet is probably on a small piece of grit, sand etc. stuck in the float needle seat. I've had this happen a few times and have had luck spraying B-12 Chemtool into the fuel inlet on the carb, with the float bowl off to flush the needle and seat. You could try this first, it may save you some complete disassembly time. Quote
