Cotton eyed Joe Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 I got a twisted crank sitting at the shop, and I've wanted to seperate it for 2 years now just to see how its built and put together. Anyone have any idea where to start on it?? I can build tooling if thats what it takes. I really don't want to take it to a shop to have them seperate a junk crank for no particular reason. And, I don't want to demolish it by heating it or sticking it in the press if thats not whats called for. Quote
it's stolen Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 I dont know if you need to heat it but the crank is assembled with a press. Quote
420 RACING Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 From what I have heard you need a serious press like a 20-40 ton press, don't mark my word but thats what comes to mind. Just my .02 Quote
wayfst Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 20 ton press is big enough. get a bearing seperator your good to go. Quote
racer Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 you need to take it to a machine shop. is it welded at all? cause that could produce some problems. but i think that biggest issue is putting it back together and getting it to run true. Quote

I'll find a good machine shop that can take ...... I got a 50 ton air over hydraulic press. I was wondering if thats all that holds them together. And yes...looking at it...How in the fuck do they get them back together and running out without keyways? There what? 5-6 total pieces? Each end can be billet, the middle has to have the counter weights pressed on from what I can see. So thats a total of (not including the journal pins) 5 pieces. I know I could make one with captured keyways. That would make lining it up a breeze. We do shit like that for various food processing plants around here. I'll have to take a look at it as soon as I get sick of working on my drag bike. Quote
