which way does a +4 key go?

got a +4 key here and dont know which way it goes on the crankshaft. I'm guessing one way will advance it and the other will retard it. If I'm sticking it on the crankshaft does it overlap to the left or to the right?

 

I'm guessing to the left to make it fire earlier correct?

You are guessing correct. When looking at the crank from the end, it should offset to the left. The flywheel should be "indexed" forward.
