recomp Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 My brother in-law has a 1987 LT500R and it has problems. What it does is, when he starts it up it will rev high until he pops it in gear and starts to go. Then it will idle fine. We thought it was reeds and we replaced them, but it still does it. Does any one have any ideas why or how we can fix this? When riding it, it is fine. It only does it when he gets back into neutral. He has to put it in gear and then let the clutch out a little and then the idle goes back to normal. Thanks. George Quote
ledofthezep Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 Very interesting. Almost sounds like an air leakage issue...but I've never heard of what he's got going on. I guess you could check for leaks, for grins if nothing else. Clean the carb, but hell I don't know that's going to make a shit if it does ok everywhere but neutral. I dunno man, if you figure out what's going on...let us know. Quote
zilladude Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 Either too lean on the pilot or air leak. A couple of common problems are base gaskets blowing out & loose crank bearings. The big single likes to chew up crank bearings. Quote
ness Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 I think it is the throtel cable getting hung up somewhere. Could be the throtel cable housing is kinked. This will cause exactly the symptoms you are describing. Quote
svtkid78 Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 I had the same prob. When I rode it it was great but when I shifted to neutral it idled like a bitch. Not sure if it helps, but i didn't have enough freeplay in my throttle cable and it was holding my slides up a bit causing it to rev to the moon. Just something else to check. P.S. they are pretty fun bikes I have a 1987 as well with just a pipe and in mint condition. Quote
recomp Posted July 16, 2004 Author Report Posted July 16, 2004 Thanks for all the info. I will run it by him this weekend. I still like my banshee better, but his quad does have some gut to it. Quote
