What Is The Ideal Temperature Of Engine Exhaust?

I finally got my hands on an infrared thermometer and I want to check my temperature at the exhaust. I just have no idea what temperetures are the ideal ones for exhaust.

From what I know, after talking to the sled heads here, and other duners and engine builders, with an EGT (don't know if the infraredpyrometer is the same) the temp should be 1000-1100 for drag racing. Anymore than that you are risking melting down.

I don't know about the outside of the pipe, as the heat has had a chance to dissapate. Its much different measuring it from the outside with the infraredpyrometer than it is with a bi-metallic strip 10" from the exhaust port on the inside.
