Meat Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 I just cut a new chain to length sunday night. assuming you dont have a chain breaker tool.... remove the chains masterlink and take the chain off the rear sprocket. Slide your axle carrier all the way forward so you have full chain adjustment and tighten it down so the carrier doesnt move. wrap the chain around the rear sprocket and stretch it tight, overlap the two chain ends and then..... things get interesting... you gotta figure out what links need removed and what link "pin" needs removed to remove said links understood. Just take a good look at the chain and how there are two different links, look at the masterlink and fully understand how it links the chain together. Once your 100% sure you know what pin to remove, take the chain to your local bench grinder and grind the pin head down flat. Hammer and a punch will pound the pin out. Remove the pin&links and your done. Go put the chain back on and hope you cut the right pin grinding and removing the pin is the most physical part of the process, and its usually pretty easy to do. The pins usually pound right out. Just double and triple check where you going to cut the chain, you gotta grind the correct pin. Iv cut a few chains short in my time Quote
