Fresh rebuild, nasty top end boggg

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I'm a long time reader on this forum... been a great resource and truly appreciate everyone that helps out.

To start off, I just got done doing a fresh bore, new pistons, different carbs, different head. The head I traded my stock one for, it's a stock head thats been shaved but I have no idea how much. I put all this together and it starts right up, and anything under half throttle it runs like a top. But right when I go past half throttle it's a straight bog. Anything past half it bogs, like a switch. It's bad

My bike has the following.

Fmf gnarly pipes

Vf3 reeds

Keihin pwk 28 flat slide carbs

K&n pods with outerwear

Stock crank as far as I know

Am at roughly 200 feet above sea level

I run non-ethanol premium fuel 92 with torco gp7 mixed at 4 ounces a gallon.

I tried jetting it all day yesterday had no luck. I had a 50 pilot in it and had mains all the way from 152 to 162 and I noticed no difference in the bog going through each one. I did notice it ran a little better when I pulled both the chokes and pinned the throttle through the gears.

Any help or suggestions are highly appreciated, I'm kinda stuck where I'm at. Gonna very throughly clean the carbs tomorrow morning and do a leak down test if I can get the parts together to do it. I would also love to do a compression test to see if I need higher octane gas but I don't have access to a good one, I have a harbor freight one says I have 120lbs in each and the autozone rental says 110 in each.... I feel there's more than that in it when I kick it. But who knows

Thanks again guys!!!

Ok, so I'll need to check the reeds, then I'll do my leak down test and see how that goes. What do you mean I didn't listen that it's too lean Larry's shee? It's such a dead bog it must be so lean or so rich.. I put the biggest main I had in it and it didn't even effect the bog. I'm thinking it has a bigger problem but I'm not sure, still kinda learning this stuff. Talked with a few guys down here and they're saying to put 146 main and a 42 pilot and go up from there. I dunno, I'll do the leak down test and see what's up.

Thanks for the replies!!!

It doesn't pop it pretty much sounds like you hit the kill switch, but you can tell it's still running. Barely makes any power up there it just keeps going at the same speed as it bogs. Doesn't gain in speed at all after half throttle, before half it rips good. But right after its no good....

Thanks for the help man really appreciate it.

Got the bike running and let it warm up a little. Then took it down the street. The bog is now more of a top end hesitation. All I did was Clean the carbs, put B8es plugs in it instead of the br7es I had, checked the reeds and do the leak down test. It seems to run better but still has a hesitation when pinned. I have a video, if anyone wants me to post it I will. Thanks.
