The '87 & '88 swingarms and carriers were different than the later model ones. The early ones used four short bolts instead of two long ones to hold the carrier to the swingarm. Also on the older ones, the carrier mounting tabs go on the outside of the swingarm tabs. So the washers that are welded to the upper swingarm holes are located on the outside of the tabs on the earlier models, while the later models have the washers on the inside. To use the old carrier with a new swingarm you will need to add a couple of washers as spacers on the upper bolts.

So yes, it is a bolt on, but you'll need to use a couple of extra washers.

ok but how about a new carrier with an old swingarm how would that work or would it

Whoops, I guess I didn't read you're question carefully.

Yea, it will work, but you'll still need to use a couple of washers as spacers.
