banshee shifting issues

i seeking advice for my friend so bear with me. he has a 1987 banshee with basic bolt ons....exhaust,filter,cool heads,ect... last week it was shifting just fine and we went to get it out yesterday and it would not downshift.so while i took it around the field i noriced if you push in on the shifter and down at the same time it downshifts just fine. but its a hit and miss prblem it does it soemtimes then other times it dont. any input is appreciated

check that the splines arent striped where the shifter attatches and then take the clutchcover off and inspect for damage..
