People are saying air leak.....and that's a good suggestion. But you might be lean in your mid RPM. Jetting might be the issue. If you beasted on it all day and were just heading home with your girl on the back....you might have been going slow enough that the main wasn't feeding that beast as much as when you were really into the throttle. So your pilot might be too small or needle might be set too low. There are all kinds of reasons why one side burns down first.

Air leak would be one of them. So could having more packing blown out of one silencer than the other, slides not adjusted evenly, loose carb top or not as tight as the other, Float levels set different from side to side on your carbs, un-even setting on the airscrews, both cylinders are lean but a fouled or bad plug saves one side while the good plug burns the other side down, something as simple as a loose connection of your pipes to your cylinders can act like an air leak, piston to sidewall clearances that were too tight on one side can cause extra heat and detonation.

I've learned years ago that people's descriptions of a noise might not sound anything like how I would describe it.....but from your description of the "Chuffing and Backfiring" ...that can happen from the heat of the red hot melting piston igniting the gases too early and firing before TDC (AKA Detonation) or it can be the classic sign of a flywheel that came loose. Beating on a bike with a loose flywheel can burn it down too.

Other than the possibility of the pistons being installed in a cylinder that wasn't honed to a consistent size top to bottom or with too tight of a piston to cylinder clearance.......the responsibility of the "Tune" is on the owner. Jetting, timing, break-in, oil mixing, octane choice, checking plug color, keeping the bike moving and getting air in the radiator is all on you.

Sorry, but riding a Banshee isn't hard. Plenty of my noob friends throw a leg over my bikes. But OWNING a Banshee requires that you be in tune with your machine. You can't rip on it till your wise enough to KNOW it's tuned correctly. Any time the bike feels different (Better or worse) you better start looking into why.

woah..........thats some food for thought,i see iv got lot to learn,it did start running a little better about 3/4 the way through the trip that day but as it was my second day with the bike i never thought much of it!i will deffinetly have to watch more closley and pay more attention.

so as an update,i got it rebuilt and it needed a piston etc.....so what caused all my problems?a broken impeller gear was the culprit of a 500 dollar repair bill!!!!

Glad you found the answer!

Yes impellers can be an issue. I always switch to the billet impeller and a fresh drive gear. (Muller has a metal gear now and it's awesome.) You never have to worry about it breaking or stripping out again.

So before you go ripping on that new set-up.....do some research on jetting and get to a point where you understand what to look for as far as plug color.

On your first few rides, have a plug wrench handy and check it often. Don't assume that now that the motor is fresh, the old jetting was correct for it in the first place. CONFIRM ON YOUR OWN that the jetting is good so that you don't burn down the new top end. Many times the previous owner never really found a place to rip that bike wide open in 6th for a long enough time for a lean jetting issue to present itself. Plus a huge number of machines are running around set-up lean in the mid and owners don't even know it. (If you have a cooling issue....if the impeller is working, then you really have a jetting issue because these bikes can stay cool if air is moving into the radiator and the motor is jetted correctly.)

Other than that....keep reading on here to strengthen your overall understanding of the issues that come with Banshee ownership and enjoy the thrill of a fresh top end in a Banshee. :headbang:

Glad to hear the damage wasn't terminal and your up and running again. :D
