Jgspahn Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 Im in the market for a helmet. Ive never bought one before, and was wondering if there is anything specific I should be looking for. I figure a removable liner so that I can wash it is a must... Also, what is a decent price for a helmet? Quote
Jgspahn Posted September 13, 2011 Author Report Posted September 13, 2011 Yea, I figured the title would get some views lol. Luckily I haven't had to post in the rides of shame forum... Yet ( knocks on wood) Quote
dcalsv02 Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 it is really preference. i like the removing linear for cleaning. mine also have vents to help your head stay cool. usually want a DOT and SHELL approved helmet. i spent like $140 for mine and it like it. I used to work at cycle gear, i ll give you a quick run down on helmets. zilla was right, safety wise you want a helmet that is DOT and SNELL (not shell, lol) approved. Almost any helmet, or salad bowl can get DOT approved, SNELL is the highest safety rating for a helmet. Most helmets have a removeable liner now a days. It makes it so much easier to clean the helmet and replace liners and cheek pads if they get f'd up. you want to helmet to fit real snug brand new. The pads and inner shell of the helmet will break in about an 1/8 of an inch (it may not seem like a lot, but it is) after a few trips, so dont get it too loose. The different brands of helmets will fit your head differently, so try on a few different brands within your budget and go from there. Cycle gear has great customer service, so if you dont like your new helmet you can usually exchange it out for a different one if you havent trashed the first one. KLIM has one of the lightest and most ventilated off road helmets out right now. Check them out. I have a fox v2 and i love it. IMO Shoei has the most comfortable helmets out period. Quote
FreeAgentRider Posted September 23, 2011 Report Posted September 23, 2011 I was lookin at a fox v2 it was Hellas nice and fit well to and not a bad price. Between 160.00 and. 220.00 Quote
vifferman Posted September 23, 2011 Report Posted September 23, 2011 (edited) One thing no one has mentioned yet is weight. The cheaper helmets are heavier and can be a pain in the neck after a long day of riding. A helmet is the last place you want to skimp. Spend as much as you can afford on the helmet that fits you the best. Edited September 23, 2011 by vifferman Quote
Dicklez Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 I always wore HJC. Saved my dome a bunch of times. Its not a shoei but I like them. Quote
Jgspahn Posted September 24, 2011 Author Report Posted September 24, 2011 I ended up getting this one, in blue. http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/productDetail.do?navTitle=Helmet+%26+Goggles&webCatId=2&navType=type&webTypeId=73&prodFamilyId=29184&listingId=&sizeAttr=1265&colorAttr=387 Quote
vifferman Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 I ended up getting this one, in blue. I wore HJC helmets when I had a street bike and was very happy with them. let us know what you think of it. Quote
guns4children Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 Shoei or nothing ... as far as street bikes go. For my off road helmet goes I went into a Yamaha dealership and picked out the cheapest blue one I could find. Works just fine. Quote
