broke350 Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 I bought an '05 about a month and a half ago. It's my second banshee, and from what I can tell it's stock except for T5's and a k&n. I had nothing but problems with my '87, and never had an outing without some sort of break down. I promised myself I'd go through this one front to back before I took it 2.5 hours to the dunes just to find out it had something wrong with it. When I bought it it needed some cosmetic work. The silencers were beat to hell and held on with bailing wire. The taillight had been replaced with an older style that was also held on with bailing wire and had the wires cut. I replaced the taillight with the factory piece an re wired it so now the taillight/brake light works properly. I also replaced the stingers and silencers with the kit from Toomey. Installed a new set of handlebars and got the key switch mounted back in the factory location. The new factory decals are on the way, then she'll look good as new again. Now that all of the cosmetics are taken care of, I want to check over the mechanicals of the quad and make sure it's fit to ride for multiple day outings. I've cleaned and oiled the airfilter and installed a new outerwear. I just ordered a new chain and Tmdesigns case saver. It's been sitting in the same spot for this whole time and no oil spots or other fluids on the floor. Coolant looks good, and it starts and seems to run fine. The frame looks good, and it has a full length aluminum skid plate. I just want this to be a good dependable stocker. Is there anything else I should check on the quad before taking her out? I'm planning on hitting the dunes with it on October 1st. Quote
Infamous039 Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 I would say change the tranny fluid, drain the gas tank and put fresh mix & gas, check the clutch make sure its working properly and not burned up. Clean the carbs out and check your jetting to ensure your not running to lean. Always remember that someone selling you a bike may not always be honest with you, so you have to treat it as if it needs a full tune up/service. Quote
broke350 Posted September 12, 2011 Author Report Posted September 12, 2011 Thanks for the reply. Any way to check on the clutch without pulling the cover? I've only ridden it around the storage complex which is concrete, so no high speed runs, but the clutch seemed tight for at least that little bit. trans fluid change is also on the to-do list. I hope to get it in the dirt this weekend to do some plug chops. I figure if any jetting adjustments need to be made, I'll be cleaning the carbs then anyway. Thanks again man. This is the stuff I'm looking for. Quote
Infamous039 Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 If the clutch is engaging as it should with no lag then it should be good. I would also put some fresh spark plugs in also. This will allow you to know that everything has been freshened up. Thanks for the reply. Any way to check on the clutch without pulling the cover?
