AC-BANSHEE Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 Why do they say to soak your chain in kerosine? its hard to find. I have the Yamaha gold chain on my bike (non-o ring) is there anything else you can soak your chain in to remove rust? sorry for starting a new thread on this..but i couldnt find anything on this Quote
AC-BANSHEE Posted July 22, 2011 Author Report Posted July 22, 2011 kerosene is not hard to find. but it is better to just replace your chain. the chain isnt in that bad of shape..it doesnt bind or kink.. it just has some surface rust on it Quote
Dicklez Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 Why is Kero hard to find? Were do you live? Plus I've seen O-ring chains go for 13 bucks on amazon. Not saying it will last. U could use diesel or break cleaner. Hit it with some scotch bright pads too if you to take the rust off. Quote
vifferman Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 (edited) Kerosene quickly and easily removes old lubricants and other gunk from your chain withou preventing the new lubricants from doing their job. If your chain is rusty I would recommend replacing it. Edited July 22, 2011 by vifferman Quote

Banshee Chad Posted July 23, 2011 Report Posted July 23, 2011 Spray it with wd after every ride. That's what I do, still got stock chain on the 06 I bought new. Quote
volcrano Posted July 23, 2011 Report Posted July 23, 2011 ill tell u what dude no shit,if u have the time, drop it in a bucket of used motor oil for a week.pull it out and it will look like brand new, granted if its stretched well it aint gonna help that.but if its just rusty and nasty,do it.i found it out because it fell off the shelf and half was in and half was out of the bucket.being lazy i let it go for a minute lol.pulled it out and the part in the oil was shiny clean, just needed wiped off.try it,its great.and to chad, yes use a chain lube, not necessarily wd 40.wd washes away the grease the wax uses and chain needs.also if u google how to correctly oil a chain it will help u.its not just sraying along the chain, that does absolutely nothing.u lube perpendicular to the chain at the bottom of rear sprocket spraying down in the "cog" of the chain.look it up,id post a link but i dunno how. Banshee Chad Posted July 23, 2011 Report Posted July 23, 2011 (edited) Ya, I used the silicon chain stuff, but wd seems to repel water and dirt/sand better. Never used chain wax tho. And yes, with swinger on stand I spin wheels and spray rear sprocket, then I spray front sprocket and rollers all good. Also I spray all suspension and moving parts, but my bike does a lot more sitting than rippin. Edited July 23, 2011 by Banshee Chad Quote
AC-BANSHEE Posted July 24, 2011 Author Report Posted July 24, 2011 ill try the motor oil trick, the chain is in great shape, next to some surface rust, but im super anal about my stuff looking clean, so ima give it a shot thanks guys! Quote
