you just have to go down even with the ring around the outside edge of the gear. you should not have to gow down into the gear. i did not realize this until reassembly. It will save alot of time and evergy too. just make sure to check they clear the dogs on the mating gear when you reassemble.

 

 

o and if you are a scatter brain like me, bikebandit.com has a nice exploded view of the transmission and all the washers and clips under the OEM parts section.

Thanks for the info. I have a clymers so putting back together was pretty easy.
