willy.usn Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 While in process of doing top end rebuild, I took the head off to see that the right side of the head was dinged up pretty good. Pulled the cylinders off and inspected the old pistons, rings, and jugs with no metal missing anywhere. The current spark plugs that came out where not missing any pieces either. Has any one heard of the spark plug tip breaking off? Also should I go ahead and split the case and make sure nothing is in the bottom? PS The old piston has no damage to the top. Im thinking that the previous owner had something happen and replaced the piston with out touching the head? Any ideas welcome. Pictures available if needed. Quote
Josh Z Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 As long as the pistons look good then it should be ok. It probably is from a previous rebuild. Just make sure the crank and everything feel fine. and by the way, splitting the cases really only takes about an hour. It's good to do once in a while so you can check your tranny etc. Quote
Burt Reynolds Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 I have a run a lot of dinged up heads on stockish motors. ITs probably not optimal, just make sure none of the little dings have sharp edges. Quote
AKheathen Posted December 14, 2010 Report Posted December 14, 2010 i had a dinged up chamber when i bought mine.......no amount of fine tuning and syncing could get rid of the shake and vigorous vibration.....runs smooth as ever with the 20cc domes in a coolhead........some nicks are ok, but deep gouges will give you a compression imbalance, even if it pumps out the same kicking compression on both sides....just my opinion Quote
willy.usn Posted December 14, 2010 Author Report Posted December 14, 2010 thanks all for the replies. I'm sure its good, but its a good to convince the wife that i "need" to replace with a cool head and 19cc domes!! Josh Z: sounds good for the cases, the frame will be getting powder coated among a few other parts this summer in the Glamis off season. Ill split the case and tear EVERYTHING apart then to waste off season time. Quote
