So Cal Suspension Posted June 22, 2010 Report Posted June 22, 2010 Well Im in the middle of rebuilding my elka shocks and wanting to know if anyone knows how to rebuild the rebound adj (Knob) type. Well mostly just take it apart to put new O-rings in. You need to completely de-pressurize the shock and drain the oil. Elka has had three or 4 different hand adjusters over the years. Post up a pic of it and I'll be able to tell you which one. Quote
GrMeyer Posted June 22, 2010 Author Report Posted June 22, 2010 well everything is taken apart. Just need to figure out that knob part. Damn this thing!!! Sorry for the bad pic. from the cell phone. Left my camera in the 5th wheel. Quote
GrMeyer Posted June 22, 2010 Author Report Posted June 22, 2010 Sorry forgot to attach the file Quote
So Cal Suspension Posted June 22, 2010 Report Posted June 22, 2010 This is on an Axis shock I'm rebuilding right now, but it will be identical to an elka. #1 needs to unthread. Elka might use a pin-type spanner wrench. You will need to clamp the rod end in a vice, and unscrew that retainer. #2 should also be a pin-type spanner, and will unthread the same way. You will need to spin the rebound adjustment all the way until it locks so you can apply force with the spanner. Remember everything will be loc-tite'd. #3 will consist of two tiny springs, and two tiny little balls in there... don't lose them... lol. there should be two o-rings... that's it. If you're not getting any leakage out of there, I would consider not disassembling that part. Might be more of a pain in the ass than anything. Those rarely go bad as they don't see as much heat, or any movement. Quote
GrMeyer Posted June 22, 2010 Author Report Posted June 22, 2010 Sweet Man. I will try to get them off tomorrow. There was a light build up dirt. But I really dont know if they are bad due to a seal head going bad. So I have the parts and will get them done. I only have another pair of shocks on a raptor 700 that are the same but brand new. But it is nice knowing how they will come apart. The rest is CAKE... The oil did smell bad and as you had told me before to check and see if the oil felt it had a metallic feeling and they do. Well 3 hard years of dune riding will do that I guess. Only need to find parts for (Seal head and wear band) the rear- Banshee, 660 Raptor and Yfz450 front shocks. Quote
GrMeyer Posted June 23, 2010 Author Report Posted June 23, 2010 Yeah it is on there!!!! I guess Ill just put the shock back together and if it starts to leak after the rebuild Ill have to take it apart and fix it then. But just found out that the kit I ordered from Elka doesnt come with the Piston wear bands. What a joke. I would think that when you order a full rebuild kit for the shocks that they would put those in there. NOPE. boy was I wrong. But it has everything else. Damn them!!! Oh well. I have to rebuild the elkas on my rhino so ill just order them then when I order more parts. Quote

I use blue for everything. The red is a little overkill, but that's how we did it at Bilstein too. Seriously? They didn't include the wear bands? That's the biggest wear part in ANY shock...Sounds like it's gotta be a mistake... maybe if you just call and give em hell they'll throw some in the mail to you, "aye". I had the pleasure of speaking with someone at Axis yesterday, and those guys were freaking awesome. The shock I'm rebuilding for DonkeyPuncher had the old style seal head in it... and he had me take two quick measurements and BAM, had the new one on it's way to me. I think just based on that experience Axis' are going to be my next purchase. Quote

But I have a guy that gives me his pricing on all the shocks because I have so many quads and a rhino with them. But all in all thats what I said in my email is that was the main part that I was looking for along with the seal head on the rebuild kit. Ill just have him throw them in when I put my order together tomorrow. What oil are you using for your shocks? Are you using a lighter oil for the fronts then the rear? And do you know where I can order the seal heads and wear bands for the rear shocks of the banshee and 660 raptor? I contacted Atv parts Unlimited and they said that the seal heads are $15.00 each but didnt have a clue on the part number's for the wear bands Quote

For hard trails, or tons of jumping, I will run a slightly heavier weight oil than comes standard in the shock. Typically elka's, axis, and TCS call for a 3 or 5 wt oil... In works I like to run a 7wt, since their seal tolerances are a little looser than the other three brands. If you find a place to order the seal heads complete for the shee rear shocks. The place I used to get mine from discontinued them, and now I'm without a source. Quote
