Strawboss Posted June 14, 2010 Report Posted June 14, 2010 (edited) I remember seeing a post on here a long time ago about repairing the fuel tank inserts that hold the tank shrouds in place once the inserts spin in the fuel tank. I think they used wood inserts to replace the tank inserts. I did searches on here for way too long and couldn't find any related post. Does anybody have a link to it? I think I can probably figure out how to repair it, but I wouldn't mind reading that old post again. I think it was written pretty well if I remember correctly. Thanks! I tried to find that link for over an hour. At least I know it is gone now. Thanks for the new link and info. Later! Edited June 15, 2010 by Strawboss Quote
-Herbie- Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 I just had to deal with this on my shee. I used the claw end of a hammer and pryed on the bolt until the brass insert and the bolt came out. I cleaned an area out in the plastic tank where the insert seats with an exacto knife just to open it up a bit. I mixed 2 part plastic epoxy, gooped it into the hole in the tank. Then pounded on the new bolt I had threaded in place until the brass insert seated in the hole. I put another layer of epoxy over top of the front edge of the insert. Worked like a charm, insert is solid as a rock and doesn't spin. You also could actually just fill the hole with this epoxy with the bolt in place and it will form around the threads making a nut. Either will work. This is the eposy I used. http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3506527&kw=epoxy+glue&origkw=epoxy+glue&searchId=48181493064 Quote
SAVAGE420 Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 I even looked on wayback-machine as i remember it was pinned a couple years ago. But its gone from there also. Have a look. http://replay.waybackmachine.org/20081009223501/http://www.bansheehq.com/forums/index.php?showforum=1 Takes a couple seconds to load. But anyways, it looks like herb has some good tips for you as well. Quote
Strawboss Posted June 25, 2010 Author Report Posted June 25, 2010 Thanks guys!! I actually had to fix some inner clutch cover inserts on an old Polarpie Xplorer. I used 1/4-20 threaded wood inserts from the hardware store and it worked like a charm. Thanks again for all the info. Later, Ryan Quote
AKheathen Posted June 27, 2010 Report Posted June 27, 2010 wow, i didn't know it got chopped when the old links were consolidated. what you want to do- assuming the screw is still stuck in the tank, cut the head off the srew and clamp on to the threads with a drill chuck. set it on high speed, and run it for a min, untill the plastic heats up and the wholew insert comes out with a little pulling. this will leave a nice, clean round hole that you can either use the above mentioned insert, or get a well nut from the hardware/ home improvement store, which should be readily availiable in stock thread size, to avoid mix-matched bolts/screws.
