Opinions on gear for dunes

Ok me and a few buddies are headed to lil sahara for the first time June 3rd. I JUST put a duneable n down 1-5th in and I'm wondering will I need 6th in the dunes? I'm thinking I might need to put stock tranny back in??!? Someone chime in and let me know. Thanks

I NEVER use 6th gear at glamis with stock gearing. Unless i'm WOT in the flats, but that just gets stupid in the sand sometimes. Usually I hover between 3rd and 4th, sometimes into 5th. I think you'll be perfect with the 1-5.

Little Sahara at Waynoka, Oklahoma, I'm guessing. If so, I've been there many times, and there really aren't many places to use all 6 gears. In all my trips down there, which is probably 50, or so, I think I've gotten into 6th a handful of times, at the most.

Sounds good! I really didn't wanna tear it back down. Lol. I'll throw on my stock rear sprocket (I'm 14-44 now) and it should work out. If not I always have my 15 tooth front to try out. One of the guys I'm going with went last year and he keeps telling me Ima be hunting another gear and Ima hate it. Hater lol

With your mods, I'd say put the 15 tooth on before you even leave. I run 15/40 on a stock cylinder 4mil, with 10 paddle haulers no problems.

yes, sorry. It is LS, OK. Thanks for the responces Guys. I really want this trip to go well and not be upset or dissapointed with my setup. Basically it WAS a drag bike, 4 mill FaST drag ported motor, 8 over arm, I have 10 paddle extremes and itp sandstar fronts. Trading my CPI oof's for some shearer inframes tomorrow.

My last trip down was a disappointment, because one side of my coil quit on me, but that's really the only time I've had mechanical problems. Good luck, have fun, and be safe.

Ouch! man that sucks... hopefully you had means to get another while there..... thanks and ima sure ill have a blast....

I had to buy one down there, and it was almost at double what I could get one for, here at home, so take any spare parts you think you might need. Also, you really have to watch out for others, as many people tend to get really stupid down there, and do things like jumping dunes, without somebody on the top, watching for others coming up the backside.

yeh, just take some sprockets just in case.

theres always those stretch's you can smash 6th down, and you dont want some one else to over take you hahah

 

i wouldnt change ya trans just for one trip tho.

 

puncture repair kits are a must.

The worst problem with tires at Little Sahara, is sand in the bead. Come to think of it, I've never saw a tire punctured down there.

i ride at ls all the time and RARELY hit 6th gear and i run a 13 front. prolly bout to change to a 14, but just the same. When i do hit 6th, its fun and feels fast as hell, but its def not necessary.

this is often debated but with that long of a swinger you dont have enough paddles.

 

i run 10 paddles on my trail paddles with a 4 over and spin pretty good.

 

also if your tires are 22 inch tall 15-41 out of first gear works pretty good.

 

again i dont know what kind of power your putting down with that motor. but this is what ive experienced.
