hello all, im gonna start off by saying that i already searched for the last hour or so and didnt find an answer...here we go basically i picked up an 02 shee about a week ago in non running conditon. this is my first atv first 2 stroke engine and first carb'd engine ever and i cant get it to turn over. i compression tested it and it only had 90 psi leaking down, so i tore the sucker apart and found out that it has 30 over wisecos in it and hot rods crank and rods...which was very pleasing to me!! got new piston rings and top end gasket set...bolted it back togeather last night and the only thing i could do is get it to backfire. compression is 120 now without even seating the rings, carbs are clean, reeds are in good condition, i have spark, i cleaned the leads on the stator....it seems as if the motor were out of time, but these things dont have timing do they???? i would really really appreciate if someone could help me figure this out, im supposed to go riding tomorrow and im trying to prove about 6 of my friends wrong!!! also they 4 or em are 660 and 700 raptor guys....so we gotta show em whos boss :P

Pull your flywheel and make sure the key isn't broken. That's the only way your time could be messed up.

im sorry, but could you elaborate? where is the flywheel what what key? like a harmonic balancer key? is the flywheel on the left side of the motor or behind the clutch?

yea i figure the rings were just worn out, the cylinders werent scarred or anything, my buddy who builds 1000 hp supra motors (and also has a shee) looked at the pistons and said i could reuse em so i did with new rings, and now the compression is way better than before obviously.....as for pulling the flywheel, i guess its not coming off with my hands either huh? lol any other reasons why it would backfire but not turn over? i know it will backfire if the reeds are broken, but them suckers are 100% good...

If it's back firing then it turning over just not starting. Timing or it's lean.

Did you hone the cylinders? Not trying to be a smart ass.

Did you put the choke tube back between the two carbs?

If it does come off by hand that's a problem too.

well its not a lean problem, because we sprayed eather (starter fluid) and nothing

haha of course the cylinders were honed

the choke is there and yes i have one of those big ass canisters between the carbs thats supposed to even out the air flow or w/e

and finally no, that bitch is on there for life lol

theres one more thing that just came across my mind, im using the gas that was in the tank when i bought it imma kick my self in the ass if its bad gas.....imma go to the gas station right now...but i do have a noob ass question here, what is the fuel to oil mix ratio and how do i go about doing that? i dont have a mix cup nor do i have a place to buy one right now...and use 93 octane correct? not the cheap shit???

I mix mine 50:1 Bel Ray MC 1 and use Premium gas. Bad gas will kick your ass every time. Get a baby bottle or something with oz. on it 50:1 is about 2.5 oz of oil per gallon and 32:1 is about 4 oz of oil per gallon. I just eye balled it on my ratio rite cup.

Do you or your buddy have a leak down tester? Check and make sure you don't have an air leak at a crank seal or intake gasket. Also check and make sure the boost bottle hasn't tore the intake boots.

no but there are no leaks from any of the seals also when we do a cylinder comp test it says steady at 120 does not leak out or anything also i have one more noob question...how the hell do i tighten the chain?? i have the service manual and i still couldnt figure it out it made no sense to me???

Compression testers have check valves in them they won't show if there is a leak. Leak down testers actually use compressed air to pressurize the cylinders and crankcase.

Tighten the chain loosen the two carrier bolts that hold the carrier to the swinger. Then adjust the two bolts above the skid plate evenly . Then retighten.

just to verify, you checked for the little vaccuume hose that goes from the back side of the choke across to the other carb. with that off, it will only start with about 1/4+ throttle and the choke closed, and get some backfirinng and run like crap....
