how can i find out the yr and model w/out a title.

so i am buying a second bike this week but i have a ? my freind is telling me its a 2001 but it has the purple plastics and from what i know that was 95 they had those. now i know whoever had b4 may have switched plastics but i want to know for my own knowledge. it runs good but if its not a 2001 im not gonna pay 1800 for it. thanks in advance
