throttlehappy Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 I cant get my plugs to darken up. I have dmc aliens, k&n pro flow with no lid, stock needle center clip, 30 pilots but i think i'm one size too rich, 350 mains. I'm at 2000 ft but i need it a little rich for my dunes trip next weekend. I have been climbing on my main but i cant get it to richen up. Do i keep going or does it sound like something else might be wrong. Comparing to the main jet forum it seems like i'm too far but still lean. Everything else on the quad is stock. Quote
01banch Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 well i am at 3500 feet PT mids, cool head 19cc domes and pods and am running 420 mains which I have been told is rich but it runs perfect plugs remain a constant light brown and have for a year so I would say richen some more. Get some color on your plugs and tune from there... If you jet way up and still are not getting color look into possible air leaks. Quote

What octane fuel are you running? Quote

Loc Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 Maybe a small air leak causing it to keep lean. Quote
throttlehappy Posted May 4, 2009 Author Report Posted May 4, 2009 What is the best way to do a plug check. Should i do a plug check with a new plug, or one that has already darkend up. What is the best way to check for an air leak. Quote
2003LimitedBanshee Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 Technically a plug chop, is what a lot of people swear by for checking jetting; that should be done on a set of brand new plugs. However, I prefer seat of the pants and plug color. If I had my absolute choice, I would use a dyno and air/fuel ratios to really get it right. Not having that available, I go with how it feels in the intermediate throttle range, under different loads and throttle positions and then look at the color for the main. I use the same method for checking color as is described for doing a plug chop... Wide open in 6th for 10 seconds, pull the clutch and shut it down immediately. I aim for a light chocolate milk color. But, as snop said, type of fuel and oil can affect the color you will see. Quote
Snopczynski Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 Go up on the mains until it starts to run bad, then go back down until it clears up. Quote
throttlehappy Posted May 5, 2009 Author Report Posted May 5, 2009 With the 350's i was getting the plug to darken up, but when i changed the plugs and ran a check, they never turned color, but i didn't chop them and see what was down below. I just pulled the plug and figured it was white and lean. How long do you need to ride on new plugs for them to darken up to the top, if i dont do a chop? Quote
