why would i need a matching set? arnt all cases the same?

you can do anything you want. cases are cast at the foundry in the same mold. upper and lower have matching numbers engraved . rear motor mount. right side. using unmatched cases can cause premature crank bearing wear.

COULD cause premature crank bearing wear. Iv heard of guys using different halfs for years without a problem.

But i would buy a set if it was me and $175shipped is good.

I THINK I read on here somewhere that you can pull your motor, turn it upside down and pull the bottom case off without disassembling the top end. If that is correct I would buy the set, and use the bottom case until you have more money to do the top end over in your other post, with the matching cases. Can anyone confirm if that is correct?

You have less than a 50/50 chance of it working.

In my opinion, all the work of splitting the case, swapping parts, etc. and HOPING it seals right aren't worth the chance.

I'd buy a matched set....

Can he pull his off and get it welded, or not in that area?

anything can be welded. the right machinist can work wonders.

You are correct. You can take the bottom off without taking the top off. Its a big time saver if you need to access the trans.

You are right in that they are cast in the same mold. However, the case bearing surfaces are bored together. Two mismatching cases will generally seal no problem. It is the bearing surfaces that will not match.

I have tried mismatching cases 3 different times. It worked once.

What he said... Line boaring/finish honing for main bearing is the main issue for mismatched case halfs.
