i have the air box lid off & i'm running trails in the woods, mud, dust etc. and i get lots of junk passing through my foam filters. i'm working on a rebuild at the moment and i don't want shit going into my new top end. so which would be better to use, filter oil or an outerwears, or both? the oil can be tricky cuz using too much and shee won't run to well, yeah i found that out the hard way, lol. i just wondered if an outerwears would be the best solution.

I run a Pro Flow setup. You got to oil the filter. Spray it on then massage it in. Then use a rag to remove exess oil. Just lightly squeeze the filter with the rag. I also run an Outerwear on the filter and one for a box lid. I ride in tons of crap and in alot of dusty stuff too. With this setup you will have no problems. The outerwear for the lid is water resistant and will keep most of the mud/water out of the box. The filter outerwear will pick up most of the rest. The oil will make sure nothing else gets through. Cleaned my carbs after I put the bike away last year and there was nothing really to clean. They were spotless inside.

did you have to rejet with the outerwears on? or do they flow really well?

If you oil your filter too much, you will just smoke a lot for a while and the extra oil will end up in the bottom of your airbox. No problem.

Run oil and an outerwear ( no oil on the outerwear) on you will be good.

What kind of oil are you using? Get the oil that turns sticky. Spray it on, massage it in, then lightly squeeze with a rag to remove extra. I cant remember the name of the stuff I use but its awsome. I will check tomorrow. If your filter oil drips into your airbox it will be getting sucked into your motor also. The stuff I use sets up.

i guess i'm just curious as to how the outerwear "lid" can be water repellent and still flow air really well.

They are made from the same material as the filter ones. It is an exremely fine mesh. Small enough air flows through easily but water will bead. Its not water proof, its water resistent. If it gets cloged that bad while riding, it is it held on with velcro. You can just wash it off in a stream. It is good to have, other wise all that crap will go into the box, and then on your filter, and that would be a pain in the ass to clean. Here is the FAQ on Outerwears from their website. I think it will help clear up any other questions you may have. Outerwear FAQ

And this is the oil I recommend. It works very well.
