The only problem is I needed the load on the gears from the cylinders to show what it was doing. If I had taken the shift basket out it would not have done it. No worries
-
I did and I had a brand new shift star here so I changed the damn thing and that is what it was a worn shift star. Ugh seriously...
-
gonna go see if I can zoom in some more and get a better shot of the shift star
-
let me look its shifts normal all through the gears but when I put it down in first it goes in then pops out then it pops back in. let me look again to see what part your talking about. Its a pain in the ass to see I know but at the end of the vid you can see the shift star rock back almost into (N) its wierd
-
hmm strange I can see it fine if I load it in HD and blow it up

So guys this has got me completely baffled about whats going on here. The mot just got completely torn down to look for the problem with first gear. I figured it was a bent shift for or something along those lines but when I got it all tore down the case had a crack in it on the inside it was letting the counter shaft move back and forth a bit. So I got new cases and also inspected the shift drum and forks for damage and nothing. I put the bottom end back together and then I put a drill on it and it shifted perfect with no load. I figured it was just the cases and moved on to putting it back together and back in the bike. Well I got it all done and did some break in of the engine and when I was gonna take it out slow around the yard put it in first and guess what it popped right out or half way out of first. Its almost like it will go in and out in and out. So to make a long story short pulled the clutch cover back off and noticed this. In this video you can see at the very end that when I roll the tire with my had the shift star is spinning up almost into neutral. Check it out tell me what ya think. My idea is maybe the spring on the detent bearing arm. Or maybe the shift drum itself even though it has no wear what so ever.. Any help would be great this is driving me crazy here is the vid but best to watch it in HD and you can see it spin up almost into neutral right at the end.

Yea i saw the hole for it but the ball is missing not sure if the previous owner loast it or not. hell he broke one of the needles off as well this was part of the reason I did the rebuild. As far as the choke tube yes its hooked up. I noticed that hole when I was cleaning the carbs and that thought went trough my head. Whats the ball there for just to make it roll? Kinda strange to have the ball on one side right? Is there a reason for that? -

ok so as far as jetting Here is what I ordered Main Jets 270 280 290 300 310 320 330 Pilots 27.5 30 So I know how to plug chop ect. Fill me in on how to make sure I got the perfect Pilot. Would I let it idle and plug chop a set of plugs at Idle>? Or is there an easy way to check that pilot. Is it something that I would just be able to hear or feel while riding? Jetting is very interesting to me so thats why I ask would love to learn how to do it the easy way lmao if there is such a thing!! -

As far as it running really lean that was part of the normal outcome of this project. I put in New Reeds and Pods from a stock air box and stock reeds. Was just not 100% sure that it was not only that. This is why I ordered the jet kit. Before the jets were just a little lean now there really lean. So that for sure will be getting fixed gonna be doing some plug chops ect. Once i get the jets and the other problem sorted out. I have not been running it much at all just for that simple fact. Also for the pipes on here im not 100% that there pro circuit pipes thats just what I was told there are no serials on them or anything. So that being said im gonna snap a picture of them today and ill post it maybe you guys can tell me exactly what they are. I know there are no spark arresters in them so there gonna get replaced for sure. And this thing is retarded loud so looking to quiet it down just a bit. But for now there better than stock. They were in terrible shape when I got this thing. It sat outside for months im sure and the guy that I got it from had no idea what he had. Just a good old restore of a great quad. -

ok thought you were talking about the square notch the big cutout. I gotta pull them to see what your talking about. Its pretty obvious right? So when I pull it I should be able to see it? I know how it happened I had them out they were pretty gunked up from the last owner so I cleaned them pretty good but had them out on the table so im almost 100% sure that there in wrong. Just got up so Ill be out there in a bit to take A look at them. Suppose the clymers manual says all this right!! Should have picked up the book!!!!! The funny part about this is I have read like 15 Threads about this and never put two and two together funny huh! -

kk i know it needs bigger jets for sure but smoking first thing first once i get the smoke problem fixed rejet is coming but first i need to figure out why its smoking. got a jet kit on the way!! i knew it was either lean or rich causing the heat issues just could not remember what one it was so yes rejet plug chops ect. But there is something else here the smoke. let me get these carb slides switched and will see if that fixes the smoke them once my jets get here ill throw the 290 in and work backwards... -

Good question I thought they were directional but they could be backwards I did take them apart and move the clip three times so. Wonder if just switching them would fix that>? Just out of curiosity why would it make a diffrence? I know that the slide has to go into that notch but I had them out on the table and gave them a good scrubbing so tom im gonna switch them and ill let ya know what happens -

oh yea for sure it smokes more when its warmed up than when its cold. just started it up when i had a friend over here to show him it was barely smoking at all then once it ran a little longer or idled I should say it started getting hot. The reason I have not taken it out for a ride is cuz its getting too hot when its idling so I was worried about it. I did take it around my yard and it got really really hot. I know that hot motors can mean and extremely rich condition because two strokes cool with the fuel not the oil like a 4 stroke. Or do I have that backwards ah well you get my point its running way way to hot! Was thinking about pulling the carbs back apart to check them out. To me it almost seems to be pulling air from the carb or something like that. I know its not the motor seals or head gasket. One thing I did notice is that it spit some coolant out of the overflow from the bottle. I dont know its just got me really stumped. -

its blue and reaks of two stroke oil. and just changed the plugs out there wet its not antifreeze or gear oil but there wet as hell. Im kinda leaning toward a carb problem but wet plugs seems like the damn jets are too big I know there not but with the amount of smoke and bog im getting not sure. Im not losing any antifreeze or gear oil in the box it does not go down a bit. So its got me really confused. And it ran great before the carbs got rebuild. Ugh!! -
Alright guys just to start out im gonna list my mods ect so there is no confusion then Ill tell ya what I did and what the problem is now Its a Stock motor .30 over Pro Circuit Pipes Boysen SS Reeds (New) Open Pod Air Filters Now just got the top end done brand new maybe 5 hours on it a metric shit ton of compression. I had a float Bowl sticking so figured id rebuild the carbs. So got all that done and also decided to put the boysen reeds in it while I had it apart. Get it all back together and im getting a metric shit ton of smoke at idle and even more at half throttle and so on. Not sure what changed I was gonna get it all back together and do some plug chops to make sure they jetting was good but the jets in it now seemed kinda small to me. Im just kinda trying to figure out what has changed and also I will list what I have done. main is a 240 seems kinda low to me Slow is a Stock 25 Got the needle set at the top now but went from mid up two because I was just trying to diagnose it. I used some carb cleaner checked every seal and boot and nothing no rev up at all. Im just out of options here. I have tried adjusting the carbs via the fuel air screw. and checked them for sync like 5 times there spot on. not sure what else to do from here. It seems that a 240 jet in illinois at 500ft above sea level seems kinda small was thinking of going to a 230 or even a 220 but with pipes and air filters seems kinda small to me. Any help would be awsome it ran fine until I rebuild the carbs and now its just smokes like hell out of both pipes.
