  1. for those without the tool... just wondering what y'all use to hold the hub in order to get the nut off.
  2. So in a previous thread, I'd mentioned clutch slippage issues... finally got some time to tear into it tonight. I'll let the pictures tell the story.... Got her open... A closer look Inside the cover After removing the friction plates and steels So now to backtrack and tell the story... Started out removing all the junk in the way (kick-start, etc.) Goin' good, nothing to screw up here. Drained the coolant, made a bit of a mess but oh well. I've done worse, no sweat... So I keep soldiering on. About this time my little brother comes over for a visit. He ended up staying and providing emotional support through my ordeal haha. So I go to drain the oil before taking the cover off. I find the plug and remove it. It comes out this nice cloudy gray color. Shining a light into it, I could tell it had to have been friction material. Little did I know what lay inside the case. I go to remove the screws and find that I can't get the to bust loose using conventional means. I start to get pissed and then remembered I have a nice Milwaukee 18v cordless drill sitting in my truck. I go grab it, chuck up a phillips bit and go at it. Worked like a charm... until the last screw. Go figure it was one on the bottom and there was no saving it. Out come the left-hand cut drill bits. A quick spin and it breaks loose and backs out. About this point in time I'm reaching the "what else could go wrong?" stage. Get my dead-blow hammer and tap on the cover. Comes off with no issues. As I pull it back, pieces of stuff start falling out. I freak out, thinking it may be parts or screws I need to keep track of. Nope, just pieces of friction material... fast forward... get to a point where I can remove the inner hub and can't find the socket I need. At this point is where I say to hell with it, pack it up and head inside. Now I'm turning to y'all for some questions/info... First off, can somebody ID that basket? I know it isn't stock but since I couldn't get the hub off I can't figure out who made it. Call it a curiosity... Secondly... I counted 7 friction plates. I think I read somewhere that some of the aftermarket baskets allow an extra plate to sneak in there, correct? And more... Outer and inner hubs look alright? There are a few dings on the basket from the pieces of friction material (I assume). Would these be something to be concerned about? This pic is by far the worst of them... What would cause it to do this? Just hard use or is there another issue I need to resolve to keep it from happening again? At any rate, I doubt it goes back together this weekend. Possible, but not likely. If there are any other picture requests, lemme know and I'll get some snapped.
  3. Depending on how much you kicked it trying to start it with the slides reversed, plugs could be fuel fouled. I just went through all this with my banshee. I pulled the plugs, stood the bike up on the rear grab bar, and manually worked the kicker until I couldn't see any fuel being blown out of the plug hole. Just make sure you're not flooded out, throw a fresh set of plugs in, check the idle adjustment screws, and try to get her to fire again. Good luck!
  4. I pretty much counted on opening it up and doing an inspection... gotta know, right? That's how I found out the extent of the overbore, the portwork, and the fact that there were previously 19cc domes in the motor. I did watch a video or 3 on youtube about clutch reassembly and whatnot... seems fairly straightforward. I don't know how soon I can get to it, but I'll be sure to snap plenty of pics when I do and post em up. ticktock, thanks for the reminder. That was one of the first things I did when I signed up was download that manual. I'll go give it a gander. Thanks everybody for the quick replies btw.
  5. Alright, so finally got my shee back together and got the chance to do a little riding Sunday. Motor sounded healthy and was snappier than I'd ever heard it (my work apparently paid off.) Got out to a nice open spot and went to give her hell... 1st-4th was instant redline, even 5th didn't quite pull like I thought it should (that's about all the more gear I could get in the stretch). I thought maybe I was spinning the tires. Turned around and let 'er rip again and glanced at the tires... no spin. About all I can figure is the clutch is slipping something fierce. Haven't torn it down yet, figured I'd turn to the treasure-trove of knowledge and experience within this site and it's members and see what y'all had to say first. I did adjust the screw on the clutch lever all the way in and had more clutch than I had before but it still went to instant redline anytime it came into power. The guy I bought it off of had said the clutch was fairly fresh and only had a few rides on it before he parked it. He said hiis buddy was the one who did the work, so I question... Fluid in the case was at an acceptable level on the stick, looked to be a heavier fluid (maybe gear lube?). I'll be the first to say I don't know enough on these Banshees to be comfortable just digging in and going for it. Is it possible he screwed something up when the clutch was replaced and something needs to be re-adjusted or fixed? On my old YZ125, when the clutch gave me shit I just adjusted the screw on the lever and my issues went away... I don't know what else to do besides open it up and have a look-see. Any input is appreciated. Any questions or missing info, ask away and I'll get it to ya..
  6. I got the 340s out of it... Still running the 25 pilots because I didn't have access to the right sized screw driver to get em out but I did put in some 310 mains. Went out and rode a little today and it definitely sounds good but found I've got some BAD clutch slippage going on so I can't see how she reacts under load. I'll go research that a bit and see what I can get figured out there. I'm pretty sure it's ported, but as to the extent I don't really know. The runners into the cylinders definitely have alot of material taken off of them but I haven't got the urge to pull the jugs and find out the extent. One day, maybe. Before that though, I plan on doing a plug chop once I get the clutch issue resolved to make sure my jetting is dialed in. Temps right now are probably 60-70. Summer will get over 100... but again, I'll worry about that beast when it gets here. Thanks again for all the help!
  7. I got it figured out! I feel like a dumbass, but I'll share what it took to fix... So the other night, I played with air screw adjustments, putting the smaller jets in and out, messing with idle screws, yada yada yada... couldn't get it to start. Went over to JSR Performance in Wichita and talked to John about what was going on. He thought about it a little and said "You got your carb slides in the right way?" I'm sure I had a pretty good impression of a deer trapped in headlights at that point in time. I said "I dunno." He told me to check it, because that sounded like what was going on. Got home and checked... sure enough they were in backwards. Sooo... a little more tinkering, a new set of plugs, and getting any excess fuel out that I could and I now have a banshee that will start repeatably. So stoked! I'm definitely still a newbie to the banshee world, but I'm learning as I go. Now I need to get it dialed in and go play!
  8. I really appreciate all the replies and advice. Didn't get a chance to get to it tonight, but after work tomorrow I'm going to be hellbent on getting it to start like it used to. Game plan is in place. I do have one question though... could improper Air Screw adjustment be causing me to flood out? I read that from idle to 1/4 throttle is where the air screw comes into play... I'm thinking about starting there and seeing what that does. I'll let ya know how it goes and what I figure out. Until tomorrow...
  9. no offense taken.. It had 19cc domes in it when I got it and plugs were backing out on me. Talked to john at jsr performance in wichita and he said that the plugs were most likely backing out because of detonation. I went with 21cc domes just to make sure i'd be safe on 91 octane. As far as jetting, it had 270s in it and just from researching on here and elsewhere on the web, similar setups were running bigger mains then that. jsr recommended a 340 main so thats what I went with. I did ride it beforehand but just enough to make sure it went through the gears before I had a plug back out.
  10. Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I had the tank off of it when I finally got it to fire up. At that point I thought I had it figured out so I put the tank back on (petcock on) and then it wouldn't start again. The floats are as they were before I started messing with it, but as to spec I couldn't tell ya. It was a one to two kicker to start before. Guess I should probably buy the Clymer's for that, have to wait til payday though. What are the screws on the airbox side of the carb, left side? Mixture screws? When I put it back together I backed those off 2 turns from bottomed out (what they were before I started anything)... Could that be causing it as well?
  11. First off, my setup... Coolhead w/21cc domes .080 overbore unknown port work Toomey T5 K&N Filter in stock box w/no lid Stock carbs w/TORS removal Elevation ~1300-1400' Bought my banshee a couple weeks ago, guy didn't know much about it. Tore it down, learned it should've been running better fuel than what the pump had to offer and set it back up to (hopefully) pump gas specs. I also rebuilt the carbs in the process. Anywho, I got inside the carbs and found 270 mains and 25 pilots. Thought it might be a little under-jetted and got to researching. Found main jetting reccomendations from 310-340 and 27.5 pilots on somewhat similar setups. Talked to a local shop and he recommended running a 340 main... So here's where it gets fun... The carb kits came with new needles (the ones in the slider), but they were a little shorter than the originals I took out. Put it all back together with the new needles, 340 mains and 27.5 pilots, got it to fire once and then nothing. I could kick and kick and kick all day long and it wouldn't do anything. Smelled the fuel, got plenty of spark and no lack of air. Pull a plug, reeks of fuel. So I take a lighter, warm over the end of the plug, and try it again. Kick and it stumbles. Kick again and nothing. Do this a couple times. I figure it's flooding/fouling. Talked with a buddy and we decided to put the original (longer) needles back in on the middle groove. Got it back together, kicked and got it to fire and idle for a little bit before the bowls ran out of fuel. Put some more fuel in the bowls, kick and nothing. I pull the plugs and this time they don't reek of fuel, but I can still kind of smell it. Took the lighter to the plugs again and got a kick and stumble. So I typed all that for this question... Are 340 mains too big for my setup and causing me to flood/foul out my plugs? Would I be better off stepping the mains down a little? Tomorrow night I might try adjusting the needles a bit more and see if it helps, but I'm also thinking about stepping down to a 310-320 main (like I probably should've done in the first place) when I can get to town and buy some more. Somewhat longwinded, I know. Sorry about that. Just a little frustrated... I'm gonna go find a frosty beverage of the alcoholic variety (no shooting the shee just yet). Please feel free to offer any advice. Thanks!
  12. don't know if it makes a difference or not but I was told to run BR8EG in my shee... just a racing version I guess. Was told they won't foul as quickly. If there's any truth to that, we'll see... at any rate, never hurts to have some extra plugs on hand!
  13. I appreciate all the replies! I went out today and picked up a few things for her, mainly maintenance items but also ordered a TORS eliminator. Called Jeff @ FAST and talked to him for a bit this morning. Wasn't able to make the drive there but definitely will soon. Did stop by JSR in Wichita and picked his brain a bit. All in all a semi-productive day. Learning all about my shee in leaps and bounds haha. I did find that the mains in the carbs were 270... Just from what i've learned i'm betting thats a little lean, huh?
  14. So I got a little bored tonight and decided to tear into my new (to me) Banshee. I've had it a week now and had to know what I had... Here's what I've found. I could obviously tell it had a Prodesign Cool Head on it... took it off and found that it has 19cc domes. While the head was off I mic'd the cylinders and got a measurement of ~66 mm on stock jugs. It shows evidence of port work, but how aggressive it is I don't know. (I'll try and get pics tomorrow, phone was dead tonight or else I'd have some.) I crossed my fingers, danced a jig, said a prayer but all that didn't put a timing plate in... So no adjustable timing. That is all what I learned this evening... now for what I know is it has a K&N air filter with the pro flow attachment in a stock box, Toomey T5 pipes, stock Mikuni carbs (I think. I mic'd the bore where it slides into the intake boots and it measured just shy of 28mm. Can get pics tomorrow too if need be...), uhh... I think that's really about it performance-wise. Now on to my questions... Is 91 octane fine for this setup? What fuel/oil ratio would you recommend? How much overbore is too much on stock jugs? How do I tell what size jets I have (and any jet recommendations?)? Hell, even before jets... do I have enough carb or should I be looking for bigger? Timing plate is a must-do from what I've picked up on here so far, any naysayers to that? Would changing timing affect what jetting I needed? I'm planning on making the drive up to FAST tomorrow morning, I'll probably have my carbs in tow to figure out what I'm working with there. If there's any more info you need from me, please let me know and I'll get what I can to ya. Sorry if this is too noob-ish of a post, I'm completely new to the Banshee world and I really don't wanna blow this thing up to learn the hard way that something wasn't right. My prior experience has been on a piped and jetted YZ125. Any help/input is greatly appreciated!
  15. In my mind's eye I see a drag banshee but realistically it'll probably be more of a trail runner with a few trips down to the dunes every now and again.
