  1. yea they look fine. thanks for the quick response.
  2. Hi guys doing my first top end on the shee, and when pulling the old gaskets off the cylinder i noticed theres a rubber plug in a passage right under the intake port. the new gaskets dont come with this so im not sure what to do, just reuse the old one and use the new gasket over it. Or get rid of it all together, because it was part of the old gasket. thanks guys
  3. alright tore it down last night. everything looked great. i can still see cross hatching on the cylinder. pistons looked good. havent checked the head for warpage. what i can tell is it looks like the left cylinder was leaking past the gasket into one of the cooling jackets. So im crossing my fingers thats it. there was also a little damage to the dome from a previous piston failure. If i do replace the head what should i go with? just a stock or is it cheap enough to go with aftermarket. I keep reading about coolheads but then 100 people claiming they dont do squat. and weres the cheapest place to get a top end kit? anyone recommend a brand? wiesco maybe? thanks guys
  4. compression test was done cold. old water pump was in perfect shape, as well as the gear. replaced the w/p anyways. again with the top hose off and the motor running and me pouring water into the radiator it circulates thru the motor as fast as i can pour it. if i pull the head will i be able to tell if i blew a head gasket?
  5. wow i feel like an idiot the jet is def. a 280. the radiator is brand new. Looks like i need to to start tearing sh!t apart. arggg. man am i glad i got bikes to ride.
  6. alright pulled one of the carbs. Bowl was spotless not a particle of dust in it. jets are crystal clean. main says 082 and pilot says 25. digital service manual says optional main jets are 200, 220 and 240. there is a little square symbol on both jets so i dont know if there mekuni jets or not. after looking thru the manual. i cant imagine this main jet thats in there is on the same scale as 200+ main jets. would the bike even run with jets thats small much the less haul ass. this bike should have been jetted for sea level to 2k elevation. not mt everest.
  7. that was the only thing i was kinda thinking too but with the motor running even the stock pump would circulate the water as fast as i could pour it in the radiator. now obviously thats not under pressure, but i couldnt imagine it changing that much. and i burped the system every time i added coolant or replaced something. i guess im just gonna have to tear into this thing. arggg.....
  8. If it was that far off. wouldnt it starve for fuel way in the rpm's? and wouldnt the plugs looked burnt? The only reason i havent pulled one of the bowls and checked the jets is it still has the torrs boxes on top and it looks like i cant get the bowls off without pulling one of the carbs out totally. But im thinking ill need to do just so i know for sure.
  9. thaks for such a quick response, but im a little confused. when i come to a stop and shut it down i hear water boiling(or at least thats what it sounds like) and it will do that for prob close to a full minute. and everything is scalding hot if i pour water on the head(its stock) it sizzles off instantly. If it was compression leaking past the head gasket wouldnt it stop boiling within seconds or even instantly?
  10. Hey guys 87 banshee, last time motor was looked at was close to 10 years ago by a reputable(dune) shop previous owner had records of full rebuild.barely ever road it. I bought it a few months ago. First quad for me but not new to to smokers or bikes. Quad runs great, was bored .40 over has fmf pipes,k&n updated swing arm other than that stock with orig. shocks, radiator. etc. After a few rides and just getting used to it i realize its boiling over. So i ad coolant keeps boiling over put a total of 20'ish hours mostly trail one trip to the dunes. start looking into stuff. Long story shor. I have gone to a boss radiator, pro designs w/p, 1.1 bar cap, and it still boils over on just about anything other than idilng. I also ran the bike with the hose off and the pump flows water thru the motor just fine, so i doubt theres a clog anywhere. havent checked the jets, but plugs look good. idles fine screams as soon as it gets on the pipe. NOW heres the one thing that i can see is a problem but i cant see how it could be THE issue. Did a compression test and both cylinders top out at 75-80 psi. I know thats got to be fairly accurate because i can start the bike sitting down barefoot. It kicks over that easily. but it starts every time and screams. doesnt make any wierd noises no piston slap nothing. I wish i did a compression test right when i bought it because im thinking the constant over heating hurt it. I never ran it dry but it got low a few times. So now i dont want to do a top end until i get this overheating issue squared away. Im thinking about just doing a top end. and putting in some evans. that stuff will never boil over. but if there is something wrong thats just gonna mask it. any ideas obi-wan kenobi's of banshees, im dying here and cant think of anything else. thanks,
  11. yea im going to use the plastic one thats in there. It looks brand new and the shaft is perfect. and Burt thanks for the info regarding coolant level, good to know. Ill update the post when i get the parts in and take it for a ride.
  12. Hey guys new to the forum, bought a 87 shee. with newer top and bottom end. Its my first quad, but im no stranger to bikes and smokers. So after i bought it i changed the oil because the previous owner said it sat for a while. first thing i noticed was there was quite a bit of metal shavings in the oil, so im like "great thats bad, but what am i gonna do" so i ride it. put a few hours on it, adjust the pilot screws a pinch and this thing rips, previous owner board .40 over and has k&n, and toomy's and this thing flat out flys, way more hp than the clapped out original suspension can handle(but thats another project.) and way after a few rides i noticed i was puking coolant, and i assume it was boiling over because i had to add a few cups of coolant after every ride. So i check the water pump and it looks brand new. So i change the oil again and more metal flakes(see pic below) Now i cant telll 100% if theres coolant in the oil but its def a lot thinner and looks watered down, so i pretty sure there coolant in there.Prob not a lot but enough. So i pull the clutch cover and low and behold its eaten 2 clutch disks. Theres still held in the basket so luckely they didnt do any damage to any of the gears. So im hoping thats were the metal shavings from. anyways so heres the prob. The o-ring and the tube that goes in the backside looked fine and after taking apart the water pump that seal looked fine as well, and the pump shaft is smooth. So i order new seals and a clutch and hoping thats it. Is there any other spot were coolant can get in the oil? anything else i should be looking for. thanks guys http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i455/mightydubkatz/IMG_8559.jpg http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i455/mightydubkatz/IMG_8558.jpg Disregard the red dirt in the oil thats from the pan.
